A degree or some kind of formal training and certification is almost surely required for most jobs that dont involve sales, the service industry (i.e. bartending, cleaning services etc..) or manual labor. Doubly so since the economy has taken such a down turn. When the economy was thriving you could make good money (35k – 55k) in any of the three fields I just mentioned. Now not so much.

No thank you, I will instead choose a low to moderately well paid job that I love instead. All of these professions are as bland and as uninspiring as white rice. My current profession: graduate student. As long as I budget well I will be financially fit by the time I earn my PhD.

Not sure about the secretary thing. I used to think the same, but I work for a great international organization as a Secretary and not only do I get an above salary and benefits, but I also travel all over the world on duty. I am actually doing better than some of my friends with Masters degrees. Not that I am saying aspire to be a secretary. I guess the bottom line is that better opportunities may be found even for less qualified people – I am definitely not complaining!

True – the title of the aforementioned article from yahoo was “10 Jobs With High Pay and Minimal Schooling Required!” A regular 4-year degree is not required, but most require add’l training. And of course, a degree wouldn’t hurt either.

that’s great and all and I know that college is a bigtime expense in this country but it’s always good to have a degree – just in case!

Also, don’t forget that being a business owner or being in a sales position has the highest upside income potential and there are usually no degree requirements.
