Catalog Choice Review – How to Stop Junk Mail from Coming to Your House

By Heather Levin

Are you sick of getting a stack of catalogs in the mail? Are you tired of having a gigantic Yellow Pages book dumped on your front porch every few months?

Join the crowd. Junk mail is a serious problem in the US. Over 100 million trees are cut down to create our junk mail. According to Do Not Mail, that’s the equivalent of cutting down the entire Rocky Mountain National Park – every year.

Plus, we get over 10 billion pieces of unwanted junk mail a year – and that’s just in the United States. We’ll spend, on average, 8 months of our lives dealing with all this junk mail.

Sounds pretty serious when you look at it like that, right?

Less Mail, Less Money Wasted

You know how tempting it is to spend money shopping for something when a catalog comes in the mail. You sit on the couch and idly flip through before tossing it in the recycle bin, and then there it is: that perfect sweater you didn’t even know you wanted until this very minute. And now you can’t live without it.

All those catalogs, coupons, and credit card offers are designed for one thing: to get us to spend more money. If you keep that junk out of your house, you won’t even be faced with the temptation.

Also, think of the time you’d save if all that mail wasn’t coming in the door! No more sorting and shredding. No more piles of paper clutter. Sounds good already, right?

Pick and Choose Your Mail

This is why using a service like Catalog Choice is so awesome. Catalog Choice is a free service that enables you to pick and choose the credit card offers, catalogs, and coupons you want, and which ones you don’t. This includes getting a phone book twice a year, or not. Finally you’ll be able to get rid of those annoying credit card and insurance offers.

You tell them what you want to stop getting, and they make it happen. Simple.

Get Unlisted

You can upgrade your Catalog Choice service by making a $20 donation to the site. This donation allows you to get Unlisted.

When you’re on a marketing list, companies sell your name and personal info to other companies. This is how junk mail escalates. When you become a member of Catalog Choice, however, they make sure you are taken off those marketing lists for good.

I think the coolest feature on Catalog Choice is their Environmental Benefits screen shot, shown below.

catalog choice environment benefits

This screen shot in your account allows you to see how many trees have been saved by everyone using Catalog Choice, and how many trees you have saved by reducing your mail. As you can see, you also get a clear picture of how many greenhouse gases you’re keeping out of the atmosphere, how much solid waste you’re preventing, and how much water you’re saving.

Joining the site also gives you a Dashboard, which allows you to see, at a glance, which mailers you’ve blacklisted. You can easily change your settings, or add new companies to the list.

Free and Upgraded Services

Again, Catalog Choice’s basic mail preference service is free, and it’s a great way to opt out of and stop junk mail coming to your home.

Joining their unlisting service for $20 takes it a step forward. Catalog Choice will make sure that your name and address, and up to three others, are taken off future marketing lists. This will ensure your name isn’t sold to other marketing companies. You also get cool features like the Dashboard in your account, and you can see the good you’re doing for the environment by reducing your mail.

I highly recommend you sign up for Catalog Choice and start decluttering your home while saving the environment. If you’re already a member, what have you experiences been like? Do you miss the junk mail?

I’ve been using Catalog Choice for a long time but … I didn’t realize that they had expanded their service to include phone books and credit card applications. WhooHoo! I have had excellent luck with their service and getting off catalog lists. Using other means, I’ve more or less gotten myself off of phone book distributions but occasionally one slips through .. so now I know where to go! Thanks so much!

  • Dissatisfied

I have an “Free” account and have been using Catalog Choice now for 6 months. I haven’t found that it works as advertised and seems like a wast of my time. I have allowed the 4 to 5 months after requesting the catalogs to stop and got confirmations that those requests were received. I filed complaints after 3 months but they continued to arrive. I now have resorted to calling the companies directly and am being told I will still receive at least another catalog. Why did I wast all my time on thhe Catalog Choice web site? Call the company direct and don’t waste your time with Catalog Choice!
