I end my three part post party with a reality check. If you were wondering if the end times were upon us, the following should set you straight:

GasforFree.com is your answer to rising pump prices, and will also visually pollute commutes across America. And though I may sound like I am above putting graphics on my car for gas money, I’m not. I scoured this site for information in the hopes of never having to pay for gas as long as my black/gold paint job holds the vinyl stickers on my Saturn.

My ’96 vintage disqualifies me from the savings, but maybe you will qualify.

To get free gas you must:

• Own a vehicle that is between a 1998-current model year. (they take classic cars too)
• Drive an average of 1250 miles per month. (Urban Areas, University Campuses, and High traffic areas earn bonus points)
• Be the registered owner of the vehicle.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
• Have valid insurance.
• Have a clean driving record.

I would also mention that you may have to be ok with your vehicle plugging the local topless joint at your children’s soccer games.

So maybe this isn’t the best way to beat the system, but it’s good to know you have some options. Obviously, the current way we do energy business isn’t working. Erik may not agree with my hippie views on this one (I recently moved to Los Angeles) but these high fuel prices may be just what we need to leave fossil fuels for good. Usually, major market trends start with a group of well connected evangelists who find and adopt new ways to practice and, thus, preach it. I don’t have the answers re: global warming, MPGs, free market woes, and why the media loves BO, but I know that we MoneyCrashers can be the crazy street preachers that come up with innovative ways to beat broken systems.

Who knows. You may just see Erik’s face on every shirt in Urban Outfitters someday.

We can complain as much as we want about the gas prices, but it doesn’t do us any good. We need to come together as a country and come up with a short-terrm and a long-term solution to our energy crisis. We need energy to survive. Oil is the most efficient, most abundant energy we have right now, but it’s being controlled by countries that don’t like us. So, what’s the answer? The answer is finding alternative energy sources to become less dependent on foreign oil.

The Short-Term Solution: We need to drill for oil in areas like Anwar, the Mid-Atlantic Continental Shelf, and the Gulf of Mexico.

The Long-Term Solution: Check out this link with two videos of Boone Pickens explaining his alternative energy plan. He wants to explore solar and wind energy to replace natural gas, so we can use oil solely for transportation. He thinks it will take five to ten years before the wind and solar energy could take over as a primary source of energy.

He’s a pretty smart guy, and he has a lot of good points. The United States was too comfortable with the amount of energy they were consuming, and they told the Middle East to keep it coming no matter what price it is. Well, the price was never bad until now. He also points out that in 1970, we imported 24% of our oil, and we now import over 70% of our oil. This is horrible for the economy, and now we are seeing what it does to an economy when we become so dependent on a foreign import commodity.

Watch both of the videos and post a comment about your thoughts. Related Posts:

Okay, there are basically two different energy policies being proposed to help alleviate a possible energy crisis. Here is a synopsis of both:

Bush/McCain Proposal: They want to “drill here, and drill now”. Basically, they want to reverse a bill signed by Bill Clinton that took away the possibility of drilling for oil offshore of Florida and in Anwar, Alaska. They want to start drilling for oil in North America to take away the dependency on foreign oil, alleviate some of the high prices by increasing supply, and give companies and entrepreneurs a chance to continue development and research for alternative fuel resources.

Obama/Environmentalist Proposal: Continue to pump money into research and development for alternative fuel resources and drastically reduce the consumption of fuel and energy to reduce demand, rather than increase supply.

I think these are both legitimate proposals, but it is hard to tell which one would help in the short-run versus the long-run. My proposal would be a combination of both. Drill now to help alleviate the scarce supply which will cause speculators to back away from driving up the price of oil. But, do this only to give us enough time to develop alternative fuel resources. The alternative fuels is not happening any time soon. This stuff takes time. We need to stop depending so much on what Saudi Arabia and the UAB tells us what to do. We can drill and do it without destroying the environment, but only do it as a temporary solution while we perfect clean, efficient fuels.

What’s your take on this? Comment below.Related Posts:
