We are all searching for new and innovative ways to make extra money. I have spoken many times about the importance of not relying on one stream of income. I worry greatly about families that still rely on one income. If that income goes away in the form of being laid off, then your life will be severely altered. If you were able to create one or two other streams of income, then losing your day job would not be quite as big of a hit.

Wisebread.com has a great list of websites you probably never heard of that could help you save and earn extra money

I had never heard of Zilok.com, the site that lets you rent out your stuff for cash. I checked it out, and there wasn’t much being rented in my area, but I don’t think the buzz about this site has spread yet. If you are worried about liability, most homeowner’s policies will cover your liability for loaning your stuff out to others. If you find yourself renting out your stuff frequently, consider buying an umbrella liability policy. The other site that caught my attention was Cross Loop. I always find myself helping people with their computer problems. I am thinking about creating an account and possibly doing PC repair and help desk support as an extra source of income. If you are a computer whiz as a hobby, you should consider taking advantage of this website as well.

Think outside the box, and don’t rely solely on your paycheck to provide for you.

The worst part about an economic recession are the jobs lost by hard working individuals around the country. The United States has seen a spike in unemployment in the past year, and most of it came from the real estate, mortgage, and financial sectors. The credit meltdown and the corruption on Wall Street led to companies folding, merging, and liquidating. This causes jobs to be lost. We’ve also seen large corporations like Circuit City, Linens ‘n Things, and other retailers on the verge of going under. I got caught in the middle of the hiring squeeze. I left my previous jobs voluntariliy, because my wife accepted a position in Orlando, Florida, and we were living in Jacksonville at the time. I have definitely felt the toughness of finding someone who is actually hiring. If you are out of work, there are many ways you can still earn money while you look for new work. Do not assume that you will be hired quickly in this economic climate. Even if you have strong leads right away, the hiring process can sometimes take 4 to 6 weeks.

File For Unemployment

You can only do this if you were laid off by your company. Getting fired for not performing the duties of your job correctly, discipline, or any other negative reason does not qualify you for collecting unemployment. Your company must lay you off, which means they terminate you for no regarding your performance. A lay off is done for financial or corporate re-structuring reasons. Filing for unemployment can be a sobering and embarassing thing to do, but as long as you are not taking advantage of it, there is no shame in it. You’ve been paying into the system for years, so take advantage of this welfare while you are looking for another job.

Offer Freelance Work

A lot of work is transferable to a freelance setting if you put a little effort into it. For instance, if you were an accountant for a large firm, you can perform tax services to individuals with a business card and a little networking. The key is getting the word out that you are starting to do freelance work.

Join a Temp Agency

This is also a great way to earn some extra money while you are looking for another job, and it keeps you in the swing of getting up early and going to work if you were used to going to an office every day. When you sign up for a legitimate temp agency, you pay nothing for their services. They make money from their other clients, the employers looking for employees. Most of the work will be data entry, customer service, and other low skill jobs, but they often pay decent and there is no commitment with temp work. If you find a permanent job while you are temping, the employer hasn’t invested any money in you yet, so they will not be upset that you are leaving. Some temp agencies pay weekly, which is also a nice thing if you are the sole provider in your household.

Remember not to panic if you lose a job, quit, or get fired. If you panic, you will end up sitting at home watching Regis and Kelly wondering how your going to pay the mortgage payment next month. Don’t waste any time and start making money again right away.

I am sure you all are tired of the millions of scams and fake websites that claim you can make money from home. In a moment of weakness, you may have been tricked by one of these “infomercial-get-rich-quick” websites that promise you will make thousands of dollars per month. Then, you find out that there is always a catch or they keep billing you when they said it would only be a one-time fee. I know there are many stay-at-home moms and people just barely making it looking to make some extra cash. Fusion Cash is the only website that I have had good success with actually being paid for doing trial offers, taking surveys, and joining online clubs.

Here are some features about Fusion Cash:

It is COMPLETELY free. There are no sign-up fees or maintenance fees to start an account

They pay YOU to sign up. Right now, if you sign up for an account, they’ll start you off with $5.00.

You can link up a bank account to have the money directly deposited to it. They allow you to cash out after you’ve made just $25.00.

Their offers range anywhere from .25 to $30 per offer. You can choose offers that require you to put in credit card information or you can choose offers that require NO credit card information.

Watch Out For Sites Like This:

Don’t pay money to join a site that promises to make you money taking surveys or other offers.

Avoid websites that look like they were produced in mass. What I mean by this is that there are certain website programs that spit out websites with that certain “infomercial” feel to them. They have someone talking in a video, testimonials, very persuasive language, and other characteristics.

No website should ever ask you for your social security number. There’s no reason they need this information. Any income you earn would be reported on a 1099 tax form at the end of the year.

My Strategy With Fusion Cash Dot Net

First, you must have an email address that is not your primary email account. When you start doing these offers, almost all of them make you agree to allow them to send you massive amounts of spam email advertisements.

I do a mix of “no credit card needed” offers and trial offers that require a credit card. The ones that don’t require a credit card are easy, but you need to do about 10 or 15 of them to make it worth it. If you can average about $8 to 10 an hour doing these, then it’s worth your time. I like the ones that say “instant credit” because the money shows up quickly.

If you try the offers with bigger payouts, it will almost always be something where you sign up for a free trial of 7, 10, or 30 days, and they send you a product, software, or perform a service during that free trial period. Only choose the ones that say “instant credit”, but make sure you know exactly what needs to be done to receive the credit. Sometimes you need to become a paying customer to receive the credit, and that’s not worth it unless the offer is $30.00 and you can pay $5 to become a paying customer. You get my drift? Once you sign up for a trial offer, write down your account information and write down the date you signed up, how long the trial lasts, and the customer support number. You need the contact phone number to cancel the trial offer before they charge your credit card. Don’t wait until the last day, because they might pull something shady on you and still charge your credit card. Also, don’t cancel the offer immediately. The companies will pick up on this and stop using Fusion Cash as their affiliate.

Refer friends and family. you get $1 when someone signs up, $2 when they complete their first offer, and $5 every time they cash out for life. It’s a win-win situation for both parties, because they get $5.00 just for signing up. You don’t have to feel like one of those “get rich quick” jerks, because there is no risk on their part. Targeting stay-at-home moms is a good strategy, because they are always looking for ways to make a little extra cash while the baby is asleep.

So, are you convinced yet? I know this post probably sounds like an infomercial in itself, but I’m not being paid anything by Fusion Cash to write this post. I’ve been writing on this blog for almost 3 years now, so I think you can trust me when I say that this site is LEGIT. You won’t get rich off of it, but it’s a great way to earn some extra money to spend on entertainment, pay off debt, or invest in your retirement account. When I was using Fusion Cash on a daily basis back in 2007, I made $134.50 in three weeks. And I wasn’t even seriously using the site. If you commit to making $10 a day for 60 to 90 minutes per day, you can make $300 a month. That’s not bad considering it can turn into hundreds of thousands of dollars if you invest $300 a month for the next 30 years.

Click Here to sign up for an account and earn $5.00 instantly.

I was listening to the Clark Howard radio show today, and he was talking about fly-by-night MLM programs that pop up during economic slowdowns. They prey on people looking to quickly make extra money. There are plenty of legitimate multi-level marketing programs out there, but for every good one, there are at least 10 bad ones.

What is a Multi-Level Marketing Program?

It’s a business model with two levels. You make money by selling a product/service and you make money by recruiting more people to sell a product/service. Think Amway. Amway is the most famous legitimate multi-level marketing program.

Characteristics of a scam disguised as a multi-level marketing program:

There is no real product or service to sell. If the only way possible to make money is by recruiting new members, this is a pyramid scheme, and they are illegal in the United States. Make sure there is a legitimate product or service to sell to someone before signing up.

Elevated pressure from members to sign up.

Extra incentives to sign up for the program.

Extremely high enrollment fees such as $10k per registration fee.

Characteristic of someone who can do well with an MLM:

The heart and mind of salesman. You MUST be able to talk to anyone and everyone. You’ll be trying to sell to strangers, and you must have the gift of striking up conversations and selling like crazy. Very few people have what it takes to really make good money with a multi-level marketing program.

No Shame. You must be friendly with rejection. If you fear rejection, this isn’t the gig for you.

Tenacity. You must be determined to do well, and you must seek out clients daily.

Perseverence. It will take a long time to make decent money in an MLM. You cannot give up.

I don’t recommend MLM’s as a real way to make a good side income, much less a full-time income. Clark Howard cited a study that was done by Forbes magazine stating that 1 out of 100 people actually profited from an MLM. But, that’s not to say that there are plenty of success stories out there. Don’t get caught up in the hype, because MLM’s love to lure you in by testimonials of people making six and seven figures. Realize that it’s very unlikely that you will get to that point, unless you have mastered the characteristics that I listed above. Beware of those scam artists trying to take your money disguised as an MLM. When the economy dips, the scammers come out like cock roaches. If you have any questions about MLM’s, you can email me through the submissions form above.

I have written about this before, the fact that I think craigslist is a much better option for selling off personal items rather than ebay. Four years ago, you would have seen me putting up stuff on ebay to earn extra cash. But after numerous problems with ebay, I don’t know if I’ll ever sell something on there, again. If I got one more email from Xaing Yang from China about he he has wholesale goods for me to sell on ebay (a.k.a. he’s going to steal my money), I was about to explode. Ebay raised all of their fees about 2 years ago, as well. Not to mention, the market is officially flooded. Unless you have an authentic, signed jersey by Mickey Mantle or an original painting from Picasso, you won’t get as much money for your stuff as you would have 4 or 5 years ago. Once you factor in the listing fee, the closing fee, and then those little added shipping costs that you always forget to factor in when charging shipping, ebay isn’t the way to go.

Also, paypal STILL hasn’t figured out that scammers can pay for something on a credit card, send an empty box back with tracking, and then request a charge back from their credit card company. Yeah, it’s happened to me, and I was pissed. Paypal won’t do ANYTHING for you. I read stuff about it before, but I just thought the people ranting about it didn’t know what they were doing, until it happened to me.

Here, let me say it: PISS OFF, EBAY!

I just sold my dell desktop with monitor that I purchased three years ago for $500 on Craigslist. Want to know how much I paid for the tower and monitor three years ago? $500 bucks! Plus, I don’t have to deal with any fees or the hassle of shipping something that heavy. The buyer picks it up, and they pay me cash. Can it get any better? Seriously, put something up for sale that you’d think no one would want. See if you get any takers on Craigslist.

I know that craigslist has it’s share of scammers. But, they are extremely obvious, and you aren’t trusting a company like paypal to help the transaction go through. Once they hand over the cash, it’s yours to keep. I know that I sound bitter, but try to get past that. Craigslist is my best friend. Even if you need a place to stay in a big city during the peak times, you can probably find a short-term rental for cheaper than what it would cost to stay in a hotel.

If any of you have any success or horror stories about Craigslist or Ebay, post them on a comment. Related Posts:

You don’t need to explain to me that it is tough to aggressively pay off debt, save an emergency fund, and save for a down payment on a house after paying all of the monthly bills. The cost of living is rising, and there’s not much we can do about it. My philosophy about winning with money has its roots in spending conservatively, investing wisely, and finding creative ways to boost your income. If you manifest the mindset that you can make a great part-time income by being creative, then you will generate enough income to become debt free, save for a house, and start investing for retirement. Generating extra income is more of a mental feat than it is a physical one. Actually making the money is not the hard part. The hard part is getting yourself motivated to go ahead and do it. We are so set in our ways of relying on one stream of income, our weekly paycheck. What if you had multiple streams of income to rely on? If one stream of income went sour one month, you’d have three or four others to pull from. Once you are motivated to make extra income, the only other questions to answer are “What do I do?” and “How do I do it?”

Here are some previous articles that might help get your creative juices flowing:

eBay. eBay was my first experience with making extra money. There are thousands of websites and books dedicated to coaching people about how to make a fortune on eBay. The reality is that it’s getting harder every day to break into eBay and make a fortune off of it. Everyone has thought of every type of item and service to sell on eBay, and the competition is much more fierce than it was 7 or 8 years ago. Having said that, there are still opportunities to make some decent part-time income without letting it consume your entire life. The first thing that you can do is pick out all of the stuff you want to sell. Then, pick out the items that you think would do well selling on eBay. For example, an older digital camera or iPod will sell for decent money, but a used shirt from Old Navy is not worth selling on eBay. Once you’ve sold everything that you can, then you can start thinking of a product to sell for part-time income. Focus on a smaller niche that might have a certain demand. Stars Wars memoribilia or used designer jeans are a start. Do you like music? Maybe you could specialize in hard-to-find instruments or sheet music. The idea here is finding a product that you can buy for a fraction of the cost that you can sell it for on eBay. If you are buying a product for $15 and selling it on eBay for $20, you won’t make any money. After factoring in the eBay and Paypal costs, you may end up losing money on the deal. My wife and I found a pretty cool niche that we take advantage of whenever we need some extra cash. We go to consignment stores and garage sales searching for quality used jeans. Every now and then, we find Seven For All Mankind, Citizen’s of Humanity, True Religion, Blue Cult, and other high-end designer used jeans. Many of them are in great condition and we can usually buy them for $15 – $25 dollars. On average, we can turn around and sell them on eBay as pre-owned designers jeans for anywhere from $50 – $90, because these jeans retail for $150 to $225 new with tags. That type of margin is what I am talking about. If you can find a supply for your niche and resell it for double or triple the amount, then you can make some nice extra income from eBay.

Start a Blog or Write for a Blog. You can read more about how to do this from the links that I provided above, and there are more articles about it under my entrepreneurship category. The fact is that it is very easy to make some extra income from either starting a niche, informational blog or writing for another blog. I make a nice little income from doing this right now, and it usually takes about an hour out of my day to prepare and write an article.

Start a Part-Time Service Business. There are numerous resources such as entrepreneur.com and various start-up blogs to read about how to go about starting a service business. I won’t get into all of the fine details right now, but maybe in the future I will do a series on starting a part-time business out of your home for profit. Think of one or two things that you love doing or have an expertise. Are you great with fixing and tinkering with computers? Start a computer repair business. Have you been hiking and going on outdoor excursions since you were in diapers? Start an outpost company that organizes hikes and weekend excursions. Are you a great piano player? Start a piano lesson business. Many service businesses require only some business cards, a website, and some sweat equity. You can generally start most home-based service businesses with less than $1000 of start-up costs, and if it does not work out, you could probably make back enough money to break even.

Think about this and bounce back your ideas in the comments section. Do you have a story about how you creatively made extra income? Share it with us unless you don’t want someone stealing the idea!

Usually the buyer pays for all shipping and handling costs, but if you have ever shipped an item before, you know that there are many costs associated with shipping an item. You have to pay for boxes, tape, bubble wrap, stuffing, and all kinds of other materials needed to ship an item properly. Here are some tips that I have learned over the years that will help you save money and ship items properly.ÂÂ

Make sure that fragile items are packed securely. There are cheap ways to do this, but the point to be made is that you MUST use bubble wrap, and you MUST pack the box tight with styrofoam peanuts, newspaper, or other padding material.

Make sure that sensitive items and clothing items are water proof. It is definitely possible that your item could get wet during the shipping process. You don’t want pen marks bleeding through onto a pair of khaki pants. My suggestion is to put items in zip lock bags or cover them with styrofoam padding material.ÂÂ

Don’t inflate your shipping price. I know that plenty of sellers do this on Ebay, and I Know that is your decision to buy an ipod for $100.00 with $50.00 shipping.

Buy a paper shredder. I did this and it has helped tremendously with recycling my old magazines and newspapers to make perfect packing material that keep your item packed securely in the box or mailer.

Buy bubble wrap in bulk. You can find large amounts of bubble wrap at a very cheap price. It is much cheaper to buy this way than buying it at walmart or other postal supplies stores. Do this only if you ship mostly fragile items. Otherwise, it might not be worth it to you.ÂÂ

Use USPS Priority Mail. This has been very convenient for me. If you ship mostly smaller items such as clothing, consumer electronics/accessories, or cell phones/accessories, then priority mail is the way to go. Most of the time you can ship something of this size around the U.S. for about $8.00, but it is received in about 2 -3 days on average. The buyer does not mind paying this much for shipping if they know that they will receive it quickly. And the best part is that USPS provides FREE boxes and FREE tape if you tape it up at the post office and FREE labels. You know that I LOVE THE WORD FREE! It is a very convenient and very efficient way of shipping smaller items that do no require a great deal of care.

Make sure international buyers email you before they send you money. You may quote a flat shipping fee for the U.S., but if you are shipping to China, the rate is much different. Make sure they email you beforehand in order for you to give them a shipping quote.ÂÂ

These are a few tips that I learned. When I first started selling on Ebay, I got burned many times by losing money on shipping costs. Try these suggestions to help keep your shipping costs down. Related Posts:

Whether you run a full blown Ebay business or you are just selling off some junk in your house, your reputation is key in the Ebay community. If your reputation is bad, then you will have an extremely hard time effectively selling on Ebay. Ebay does a great job at keeping track of seller and buyer reputations through their feedback system. My only beef with the feedback system is that both parties have the option to leave negative feedback, even when one party has done nothing wrong. For instance, I ship you something and the shipping was horrible so the product gets destroyed. You can give me negative feedback, but I can equally give you negative feedback solely for you giving me negative feedback. You can challenge the negative feedback, but most people only look at your feedback percentage when they are checking out a seller. Anyway, keep that in mind before you go giving everyone negative feedback.

Practicing good customer service on Ebay is very simple, but often overlooked on Ebay nowadays. It is more about the quantity rather than the quality on Ebay. However, YOU can stick out in a community with millions of sellers by providing over-the-top customer service. Here are some tips for providing great customer service that will give you great feedback and attract peopel to come back and look at your stuff at a later date.

ALWAYS respond to bidder’s questions in a timely matter. Even if you do not know the exact answer to their question, make sure that you respond within 24 hours.

After the auction has ended, send an invoice and follow up with the buyer to let them know when you sent out the item.

provide a packing slip in every item that you ship out. The buyer can print out a receipt whenever they want, but it’s nice when you do it for them.ÂÂ

Take pride in your packaging. You can do it cheaply, but make sure the item is adequately secured.

Be HONEST! Do not make your used item sound like it’s brand new, unless it really does look and function like new. Buyers don’t mind buying used or refurbished items on Ebay, but they HATE it when they find out the real condition after they have purchased it.ÂÂ

Overall, be kind and courteous like you would if you were running a business and you were speaking with a customer face-to-face. Be flexible and work with the buyer if there are some special circumstances that are within reason. Never negotiate the terms of payment. Make sure all transactions go through Ebay in some way, because there is a ton of fraud that goes on when people try to pay without using Ebay.ÂÂ

I hope these tips help! Next Topic will be shipping your item. Related Posts:

The initial starting price for an Ebay auction item is one of the trickiest and most important parts of being successful with Ebay selling. Here are a few things to consider when pricing an item for an Ebay listing.

If the item has low demand, start the price closer to what you want to sell it for. If the item is in high demand, start the price at 9.99 or less and let the Ebay marketplace determine the price, which is usually close to what you want to get for it OR MORE.

Stay away from Reserve Prices. They are extremely expensive, and they discourage buyers from bidding on your item. Only use a reserve price with a low-demand, high end item that you are not willing to take a risk of earning less than you want.ÂÂ

Do not use the inflated shipping method. This is the “.01 to buy the item, 40 dollars to ship the item” method that you commonly see on Ebay. The typica Ebay user is annoyed by this, and it could discourage them from buying your item.ÂÂ

Do Research! The best way to do quick and effective pricing research is by doing an Advanced Search on Ebay. Go to the homepage, and click on “Advanced Search” in the upper righthand corner. Once you get to the advanced search screen, type in the product you want to sell in the search box and check the box that says “completed listings only”. This will give you the prices that similar products have sold for recently. It will also show you starting listing prices for similar products if you click on each individual listing!

Follow these tips, and pricing your listing will become a breeze! Then, you can focus on more important things like the description and title! Related Posts:

I have had a couple of questions about Ebay lately, so I thought that I would post some tips and tricks that I have learned from selling and buying on Ebay for the past four years. I consign items for friends and family, and I also have a few clients that I work with to sell their personal property.  People simply do not have the time to sell things on Ebay, because it is a tedious process. You must take pictures, list the item, answer customer questions, and ship the item. You can make some extra cash simply by asking your friends and family if they want you to do the dirty work of selling their stuff on Ebay for a percentage of the sale.  I bet you’ll get some takers! I had people begging me to sell their stuff at one point.  Today’s tips and tricks will focus on listing the item.ÂÂ

The title is the most important part of your listing.  Make sure the title is descriptive and concise.

Automate your listings. You will save time and money if you make all of your listings look the same. Ebay’s listing generator will save a template for you if you create one in the description box.

Do not go crazy with pictures! The average item only needs 2 or 3 pictures to do the job, unless you are selling a car or something else with great detail.

Use a bulleted format to describe items. Bullet points are easier to read than one long paragraph describing something.ÂÂ

Use only one category to categorize items. It is very expensive to put items in multiple categories. If you are selling an item that will bring you more than $500, then you may want to consider multiple categories.ÂÂ

Start a listing at night. Statistics show that more users are on buying on Ebay at night. Make sure that you either list the item at night, or schedule it for 7pm or 8pm, so that it ends on that time. Scheduling an item is only 10 or 15 cents. I have heard that Sunday night is the best time to start an auction.ÂÂ

The more descriptive you are with your listings, the less questions you will have to answer! I hate answering ebay questions, it takes time, and it is annoying.ÂÂ

Always pay for a gallery image.ÂÂ

Try to minimize your costs for the listing wherever you can. You could end up with $30 in fees on one listing if you opted for every feature that Ebay offered. The key is identifying what things are most beneficial for your particular item. If it’s a high end item, then you may want to spend a litlte more to give it more exposure.ÂÂ
