Do You prefer investing with index funds or mutual funds?

Some of you might not have an opinion about this, either because you haven’t started to seriously invest, or you’re not financially nerdy enough to care. But, I’ve found that personal finance advisors and bloggers differ quite a bit on this issue.

Financial Question Of The Day: What is Your Favorite News Source for Financial Information?

What is your favorite non-blog website, news program, or newspaper for reading about financial information?

I find myself reading Yahoo Finance a lot, because the layout is clean and they tend to write more practical articles rather than doom and gloom like CNN Money. I guarantee that every day you check CNN Money, there will be an article about how much the housing market sucks, the economy is down the tubes, or some sort of corporate corruption that is going on. As far as news programs, I watch the Fox Business Channel sometimes, but I tend to read more about finance than I do watch. I like some of the articles that USA Today puts out. They seem to have a decent focus on personal finance, rather than just the stock market and corporate news. If any of you have some good sources that are less known or if you just want to share your thoughts on where you get your financial news, feel free to leave a comment!

Financial Question of the Day: What To Do With Child Support

There are quite a few single moms and dads out there receiving child support from their ex-spouse. Unfortunately, there are also some single moms and dads out there that should be receiving child support, but they aren’t getting it. I know that one of the excuses that deadbeat parents don’t pay the child support is because they don’t trust the parent with custody to use the money on the child. So, here’s the question, and it’s more of a moral question, than a financial question:

Is getting out of debt or investing for retirement more important to you?

This is an interesting debate. Many young people leaving undergraduate and postgraduate studies aren’t too concerned with getting out of debt right away. Many of my wife’s friends who will be leaving with considerable student loan debt from medical related degrees say that they would rather invest their big paychecks rather than use it to pay off the debt.

What was the defining moment in your life when you decided to start taking control of your finances?

Maybe you’re seeking the knowledge and desire to start taking over your finances, so you might not be able to answer this question yet. But for those of you that enjoy reading this blog and other personal finance blogs, I suspect that you have had a defining moment in your life when you said, “this is it, I’m tired of living like this”, and you changed the way that you started spending, saving, and managing your finances. I’d love to hear your story. Who or what inspired you to start changing the way your handle your finances?

If you could start any small business without worrying about start-up costs, what would you start?

If you’ve got some completely innovative idea, then don’t post it here, I wouldn’t want to be responsible for someone stealing your idea.

This might be a loaded question, but I want your opinions. Be as aggressive as you want about your opinion on your favorite candidate, but try to be respectful and professional at the same time or I will delete your comment!

Would you rather start investing in the stock market first or buy a house?

Answer this question without taking into consideration the current market conditions of the housing market. I think that I would rather buy a house first, because you get two things out of it. You get a place to live, and real estate is a great investment in the long term. I like investing in growth stock mutual funds, but I think that I’d rather be owning something that I can upgrade and begin a family in, rather than having a piece of paper earning interest. However, if it meant that I was buying the house with no money in the bank, I’d rather buy stocks. I don’t ever want to be in the situation where the air conditioner dies, and I don’t have any money to fix it. Plus, I wouldn’t want to put my family through that, especially living in Florida.

I hope all of you had a great Christmas, and I hope it wasn’t as busy as mine! We had about 25 to 30 people at my mother-in-law’s house, and it was insane. But, no one got hurt, everyone was excited about their gifts, and most important, family and friends were able to be together.

Here’s the financial question of the day:

What one spending habit would you like to change in 2008?
