A vital part of personal finance is career development. In order to become wealthy, we have to be in a career that allows us to use our talents to the best of our abilities. We will make more money and succeed far beyond our wildest dreams if we’re engaging in work that we enjoy and are passionate about. Having said that, you need to grab that dream career before you can start going forward.
The first impression that most employers get about you is your resume. In a world where time is money, employers scan and filter out resumes before they start interviewing, because there’s not enough time and money to interview everyone that applies for a job. Your resume is crucial to making a great first impression. You want your resume to say everything about you in the most concise and engaging way possible. There are businesses and individuals dedicated to writing resumes for others, and I am going to give my two cents about whether it is a good idea to have someone write your resume for you.
If you are an everyday working class individual like most of us, then you should probably stick to writing your own resume. Professional resume writers churn out cookie-cutter looking resumes and employers will notice it. You’ll be charged hundreds of dollars for the service, when the task is not very daunting at all. There are plenty of software programs out there to help you with formatting and templates for a resume such as Winway Resume Writing Software. Nobody knows you better than YOU. You need to write a resume that portrays the real you in the best way possible. Having a professional write your resume for you might take away from the personalization of writing your own.
I am a big believer of keeping your resume two pages AT THE MOST. There are certain types of resumes in the medical and professional arena that are admissable to be more pages, because professors would list all of their publications and recognitions. For the most part, keep your resume concise and to the point. Highlight your greatest accomplishments and be descriptive with what you actually did at your previous jobs. I would leave out your high school jobs at Dominos or TGI Fridays. You can always put a line like “Please ask about jobs previous to (insert year). I am also a big believer of putting a section where you highlight your hobbies and interests. I believe that employers look to your hobbies and interest to find out who they are REALLY hiring. They want to see that they are hiring a well-rounded person, not someone who just sits on the couch all day when they aren’t working.
If you have an extensive career history, accomplishments, or accolades, you may want to inquire about finding a professional to help assist you in writing a resume, but make sure you are actively engaged in the writing process. Take a couple of hours one night to write your resume, have a spouse or close friend proofread it, and then relax and start submitting it to job openings. Remember, the interview is more important, but you might not get one if your resume is 10 pages long and written in crayon.
