Here is a question from a Money Crashers reader posted in a comment that, unfortunately, I think some of you may benefit from knowing the answer.

What if my ex owes me back support? Will I get his check? Also he is now married with no children of their own. Will I still get his check and how much of it will I get he’s over 2,000 behind plus owes me over 1,000 in medical expenses? How will his rebate be handled?

There is a way to collect your ex-spouses back child support owed by seizing his or her tax refund. It’s called the the Child Support Tax Intercept Program. You need to go to the county where the court order was summoned for the child support, and apply for the program to retrieve their tax refund for back child support owed. Typically, this should have been done months ago in order for you to get his 2007 tax refund. As far as the special rebate for the stimulus plan, you’ll have to ask the county/state child support agency about it.

This website has quite a bit of information about this kind of situation. If you’re reading this and you owe child support that you can afford to pay, you need to get your butt down to the court house and pay it today. Your child didn’t do anything wrong because your marriage didn’t work out. Don’t make them suffer for your problems.
