Most shoppers leave this money unclaimed for one reason. They forget the click-through. You head straight to the retailer’s site, buy what you came for, and the rebate you could have collected in five seconds evaporates.
The money is real, not a gimmick. Retailers pay portals an affiliate commission for sending shoppers their way, and the portal hands part of that commission to you. Rakuten and TopCashback, two of the biggest free portals, each partner with thousands of retailers. A few percent back is typical, and rates jump around major sale events. The rebate stacks with everything else you’re doing too: coupon codes still apply, loyalty points still post, and your card rewards still accrue.
Sign up for one portal and install its browser extension. When you land on a participating retailer’s site, the extension pops up and activates your rebate in one click, which removes the remembering problem entirely. Before bigger purchases, spend ten seconds comparing the other portal’s rate, since the same store can pay noticeably different percentages on different portals the same day. Check out with your best rewards card as usual. Expect a short lag. Purchases take days to track, and portals pay on their own schedule by PayPal, check, or gift card.
One rule keeps the whole system honest. Only buy what you were buying anyway. A rebate on a purchase you wouldn’t have made is just a discount on wasted money. Set up the extension before your next order and let it do the remembering.
