Just the Tip:

Get the Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select if you fly American Airlines a few times a year and check bags. For a $99 annual fee, you and up to four companions on your reservation each get a free first checked bag on domestic trips, worth at least $45 each way. If you always travel carry-on, skip it.

Citi issues the card, and when it took over Barclays’ American Airlines cards in April 2026, it converted AAdvantage Aviator Red accounts to the Platinum Select. If you held an Aviator Red, this review covers the card you carry now.

Key Features

  • $99 annual fee after a free first year; 19.74% to 29.74% variable interest rate (APR)
  • 80,000 bonus miles after $3,500 in purchases in the first four months, a limited-time offer
  • 2 miles per $1 on eligible American Airlines purchases and at restaurants and gas stations; 1 mile per $1 elsewhere
  • First checked bag free on all-domestic trips flown by American or American Eagle, for you plus up to four companions on your reservation
  • Group 5 boarding, ahead of the rest of economy, for the same party

Pros

  • Bag savings of at least $90 per traveler on each domestic round trip
  • Bonus worth about $1,160 at The Points Guy’s valuation of 1.45 cents per AAdvantage mile
  • 2X at restaurants and gas stations, not just on American
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • 25% back on inflight food and drinks on domestic flights

Cons

  • No lounge access
  • No discounted ticket for a travel companion, only a $125 flight discount after $20,000 in yearly spending, once you renew the card
  • Only one Loyalty Point per dollar toward American elite status, because the extra miles from bonus categories don’t count
  • No bag or boarding perks for extra cardholders on your account

For bag checkers, a single round trip with a companion pays for the card, since checking one bag each way at American’s $45 online fee saves the two of you $180, $81 more than the $99 annual fee. Carry-on travelers should take the no-fee MileUp instead, frequent flyers who’d use Admirals Club lounge access should weigh the $695 Executive, and business owners should look at Citi’s AAdvantage Business card.
