Commerce Miles is a no-annual-fee travel card from Commerce Bank, a regional bank with branches across the Midwest. You don’t need a Commerce account to apply, and the online application accepts residents of every state.

Key Features

  • $0 annual fee and no foreign transaction fee
  • 2.5 miles per $1 (2.5% back) on travel, including airfare, hotels, car rentals, cruises, rideshares, and taxis
  • 1 mile per $1 (1% back) on everything else, with no cap
  • Cash back once you have 2,500 miles, as a credit on your card bill or a deposit to any checking or savings account
  • 0% interest on purchases for the first 12 billing cycles, then a variable rate of 18.99% to 28.99%

Pros

  • A 25% bonus on cash back deposited into Commerce myRewards Savings, for about 3.1% back on travel and 1.25% on everything else by our math
  • A soft credit check, which doesn’t affect your score, shows whether you qualify and your likely rate and credit limit before you apply
  • Cell phone protection, worth up to $200 a claim after a $50 deductible, when you pay your phone bill with the card
  • Miles stay good for four years from the quarter they post

Cons

  • Only 1 mile per $1 on everyday spending outside travel
  • No sign-up bonus
  • Tap-to-pay and phone-wallet purchases may not earn the extra travel miles
  • The 25% cash back bonus requires a myRewards Savings account, which, after its first 60 days, charges $5 a month unless you keep $300 in it daily or make a $25 electronic deposit each month
  • No travel credits or travel insurance, such as rental car or trip delay coverage

If you bank with Commerce and will deposit your cash back into myRewards Savings, it’s a solid no-fee card for your travel spending. Everyone else will usually earn more with Wells Fargo’s no-fee Autograph card, which returns about 3% on travel, dining, gas, and transit, against this card’s 2.5% on travel and 1% elsewhere.
