Rotate Your Streaming Services – Pay Only for the Months You Watch

Just the Tip:

Paying for three or more streaming services at once means paying for months when most of them sit idle. Rotate them instead. Keep one or two at a time, watch what you signed up for, then cancel and move on to the next service.

You’d be in good company. The subscription analytics firm Antenna estimated that 29.5 million people, or 23% of premium streaming subscribers, had canceled three or more times in the two years ending September 2024.

Leaving costs nothing, and coming back is easy. Services such as Netflix let you keep watching until the billing period ends, so you can cancel the day you subscribe and still get every day you paid for. Netflix also keeps your viewing history, recommendations, ratings, and account details for 24 months after your membership ends, so if you rejoin within that window, you pick up where you left off.

The savings come from paying for fewer services at once. By our math, keeping two $20-a-month services at a time instead of four saves $40 a month, or $480 a year.

A simple routine keeps the rotation going.

  • Start by canceling any service you joined for one show and never left.
  • Cancel each new subscription right after you sign up, so it can’t renew once your interest fades.
  • Keep a running list of what you want to watch on each service.
  • Rejoin a service when a new season lands or its list can fill a month.

Rotation has limits. An annual plan, where a service offers one, cuts the monthly price but bills all 12 months up front, so save it for a service you watch year-round. Keep paying for any service your household uses every day, and for one you need for live sports, at least until the season ends.

Before your next renewal date, keep the one or two services you’ll watch next month and cancel the rest until their turn comes.
