Use Urgent Care for Sprains and Stitches – The ER Can Cost Several Times More

Just the Tip:

Urgent care treats sprains, cuts that need stitches, and sinus and urinary tract infections for a fraction of what an emergency room charges, and your share of the bill is often smaller too. Look up the in-network urgent care centers near you now, so a weekend injury doesn’t send your family to the ER by default.

A child’s wrist swells after a Saturday fall, and the pediatrician’s office is closed. The emergency room feels like the only option, and it’s the priciest one.

Across UnitedHealthcare’s network in 2025, the median ER visit cost $2,750, against $195 for urgent care. Those medians cover every kind of visit, but the gap holds for the same problem. A study of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas claims from 2012 to 2015 found ER prices for the same diagnosis averaged almost 10 times urgent care’s. To see your own numbers, check your plan’s Summary of Benefits and Coverage, which lists what you pay for each.

Some urgent care centers can X-ray and splint that wrist or stitch a cut on the spot. Go to the ER for chest pain, trouble breathing, bleeding that won’t stop, a major injury, or stroke signs like sudden weakness or difficulty speaking. In a child, add a fever that comes with a change in behavior.

Do the legwork before anyone gets hurt. Search your insurer’s app or website for in-network urgent care centers near home, check their hours and whether they do X-rays, and save the best one in your phone. Set up any telehealth benefit your plan includes, and look on your insurance card for a 24-hour nurse line, which many insurers offer.

Then learn to spot a freestanding emergency room. These often sit in neighborhood shopping centers and look like urgent care, but they charge like a hospital ER, facility fee included. Watch for emergency or ER in the name. At any walk-in clinic you don’t know, ask whether it’s urgent care or an ER, and whether it’s in your network, before anyone sees you.

When you can’t tell where a symptom belongs, call the nurse line or start a telehealth visit before you get in the car. When it’s on the ER list or seems life-threatening, call 911 or get to the ER without a second thought.
