Our Rating
4/5

AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card

  • Best for: AAA members who drive a lot and book travel through AAA
  • What Sets It Apart: 5% on gas and electric vehicle charging; cash back worth 5% more when redeemed at a participating AAA club
  • Cost: $0 annual fee; no foreign transaction fee; 17.74% to 31.74% variable APR
  • Features: 5% on gas and charging up to $350 in cash back a year; 3% on dining, travel, supermarket groceries, and participating AAA club purchases; 1% on everything else; $100 credit after $1,000 in 90 days
  • Pros: No cap on the 3% categories; 4% at Hertz; no AAA membership needed to apply
  • Cons: 1% on everything else; superstore and warehouse club groceries earn 1%; no 3% on AAA purchases from The Auto Club Group
Just the Tip:

Get the no-annual-fee AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card if you’re a AAA member who drives a lot. It pays 5% on your first $7,000 of gas a year and 3% on dining, travel, and supermarket groceries. Most other spending earns 1%, so if that’s where most of yours goes, a no-annual-fee card paying 2% on everything earns more.

Bread Financial’s Comenity Capital Bank issues the card, which replaced the AAA Member Rewards Visa Signature that Bank of America issued until 2022. You don’t need a AAA membership to apply, but its AAA perks help only if you buy from AAA.

Key Features

  • No annual fee and no foreign transaction fee
  • 5% on gas and electric vehicle charging, up to $350 in cash back a year ($7,000 in spending), then 1%
  • 3% on dining, travel, supermarket groceries, and purchases from participating AAA clubs
  • $100 credit on your bill when you spend $1,000 in your first 90 days with the card
  • Variable interest rate (APR) of 17.74% to 31.74%

Pros

  • No yearly cap on the 3% categories
  • 4% back on Hertz rentals booked directly or through AAA
  • Cash back worth 5% more when you redeem it for AAA travel or services at a participating AAA club
  • Redemptions start at $5, as a credit on your bill or a bank deposit

Cons

  • Only 1% back outside its bonus categories
  • Groceries from superstores, warehouse clubs, and convenience stores earn 1%, not 3%
  • AAA purchases from The Auto Club Group, AAA’s club in Michigan, Florida, Georgia, and other states, don’t earn the 3% rate
  • No trip or rental car insurance among its listed benefits

The card pays off for AAA members who drive a lot, since $300 a month on gas earns $180 a year back at 5%, compared with $72 from a no-annual-fee card paying a flat 2%. If most of your spending falls outside its bonus categories, that 2% card earns twice this card’s 1% on it and is the better pick.
