Get the Ink Business Cash® Credit Card if your business shops at office supply stores or pays internet, cable, or phone bills, since those purchases earn 5% back on the first $25,000 a year, with no annual fee. If little of your business spending falls in those categories, the Ink Business Unlimited’s flat 1.5% earns more.
Freelancers and people with side businesses can apply as sole proprietors, using a Social Security number in place of a business tax ID. Before you apply, check where you stand under Chase’s 5/24 rule on recent personal cards.
Key Features
- 5% back on internet, cable, and phone service and at office supply stores, 2% at gas stations and restaurants, and 1% on everything else
- Each bonus rate covers the first $25,000 of combined spending in its categories each account year, then drops to 1%
- $750 cash back after you spend $6,000 within the first 3 months
- 0% intro APR (annual percentage rate) on purchases for 12 months, then a 16.99% to 24.99% variable APR
- No annual fee, and employee cards at no extra cost
Pros
- The 5% covers cell phone, landline, internet, and cable or satellite TV bills
- Points can move to a Sapphire card or the $95 Ink Business Preferred, then on to airline and hotel programs, and we value them at 1.5 cents each there, against 1 cent as cash back
- Primary coverage on cars you rent for business, meaning it pays before your own auto insurance, plus purchase protection and an extended warranty
Cons
- 1% on spending outside its categories, half a percentage point less than the flat 1.5% the Ink Business Unlimited pays
- Office supplies bought at discount, department, or electronics stores earn 1%, not 5%
- The welcome bonus may not be available if you’ve ever had this card or another no-fee Chase business card
- 3% foreign transaction fee
A business that puts $500 a month of phone, internet, and office supply store purchases on the card earns $300 a year on them, $210 more than the Ink Business Unlimited’s flat 1.5% would pay. That lead also covers the half percentage point more the Unlimited pays on up to $42,000 a year of other purchases, so only a business spending more than that outside the bonus categories earns more with the Unlimited.
