Just the Tip:

Get the Ink Business Premier® Credit Card if your business pays the balance in full each month and makes purchases of $5,000 or more, which earn 2.5% cash back. Once those purchases pass $19,500 a year, the extra 1% they earn over the no-fee Ink Business Unlimited’s flat 1.5% more than pays the $195 annual fee.

Chase issues the Ink Business Premier to sole proprietors as well as companies, so a side business can apply, and the owner who applies is personally liable for the balance. Purchases go first to Flex for Business, a part of the credit line you can repay over time with interest, and anything past its limit must be paid in full each month.

Key Features

  • $195 annual fee
  • $1,000 cash back after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening; past cardholders may not qualify
  • 2.5% cash back on each purchase of $5,000 or more, 2% on other purchases, and 5% on travel booked through Chase Travel, Chase’s booking site
  • Flex for Business at a variable annual percentage rate (APR) of 17.99% to 28.74%, up to a limit Chase sets
  • Employee cards at no extra cost, with spending limits you set

Pros

  • No caps on any of its cash back rates
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • Cell phone protection up to $1,000 a claim when the card pays your phone bill
  • Collision and theft coverage on business car rentals that pays before your own insurance

Cons

  • $195 annual fee
  • No intro APR on purchases
  • Chase can cut or cancel the Flex for Business limit at any time
  • A large order that bills in pieces under $5,000 earns 2%, not 2.5%
  • Approval subject to Chase’s unpublished 5/24 rule on recent personal cards

Compared with the no-fee Ink Business Unlimited’s 1.5%, the extra cash back here covers the $195 fee at $19,500 a year in purchases of $5,000 or more.

Without big purchases or travel booked through Chase Travel, covering the fee takes $39,000 a year in spending, and a business that spends less earns more with the Ink Business Unlimited.
