Just the Tip:

A credit card refund doesn’t lower what you owe until it posts, and it doesn’t count as a payment. Until the credit appears on your account, pay as if you never made the return. Skipping or shorting the payment while you wait can cost you a late fee, interest, and a late mark on your credit report.

Say you mail back a $900 TV two days before your statement closes. The statement still counts the $900 in what you owe, and the refund can take weeks to catch up.

Federal rules put a clock on refunds, and it starts when the merchant accepts the return. The merchant has seven business days from then to send the credit to your card issuer, which has three business days from receiving it to credit your account. Hand an item back at a store and the clock can start the same day. Ship it back and it doesn’t start until the merchant receives and accepts it.

That’s how a return mailed before your statement closes can post after the due date.

So pay the statement as printed. If you normally pay in full, pay the entire statement balance, $900 included, and the refund will show up as a credit on next month’s statement. If you carry a balance, make at least the minimum by the due date, whether or not the refund has posted.

The points or cash back you earned on the purchase usually come back out of your rewards balance when the refund posts. If you’re working toward a sign-up bonus, the return also comes off the spending that counts toward it.

Ten business days after the merchant accepts your return, both deadlines have passed. If the credit still isn’t on your account, start with the merchant. Have your return receipt or tracking number ready, and ask what date it sent the credit. If that stalls, dispute it in writing with your card issuer. The Fair Credit Billing Act counts a return credit that never posts as a billing error. Your letter must reach the issuer’s billing-inquiries address within 60 days after it sent the statement the credit should have appeared on.

Keep the return receipt and tracking number until the credit posts. A missing refund is hard to prove without them.
