A Financial Windfall Requires a Waiting Period Before Any Major Decision

Just the Tip:

When a financial windfall lands, park it in an insured savings account and wait at least three months before you buy anything big, quit your job, invest it, or lend it out. Use the pause to learn your tax bill and write a plan, so emotion and other people’s requests don’t spend the money for you.

The riskiest time to decide what to do with a windfall is the week it arrives. An inheritance comes wrapped in grief, a bonus or settlement in relief, and word travels fast to relatives and salespeople with ideas for your money.

A waiting period lets the emotions settle before the money moves. Nothing you’d regret has to happen fast, and the cash earns interest while you think.

The pause also shows you what the windfall is worth after taxes and rules, which can be less than it first looks. Employers often withhold a flat 22% from a bonus for federal tax. If your bracket is higher than 22%, you’ll owe the difference at tax time. If you inherit a traditional IRA, you generally have to empty it within 10 years unless you were the owner’s spouse or fit another IRS exception, and the withdrawals count as taxable income.

Set up the pause in three steps:

  1. Park the money in a federally insured high-yield savings account, split across banks if it tops $250,000, the standard FDIC limit per depositor at one bank.
  2. Put an end date three to six months out on your calendar, and push it further if the sum changes your life.
  3. Before that date, get a tax estimate from a CPA and write a plan. For a large sum, get help from an adviser who is paid only by you and must put your interests first.

Paying off high-interest debt and covering a real emergency don’t need to wait. Everything else, from a new house to a loan to your brother, goes on a list for the end date. Until then, tell as few people as possible.

An idea that still looks good on the end date has earned its place. One that no longer does just saved you money.

If you’re choosing an account to hold a windfall while you wait, compare the best high-yield savings accounts.
