Labor Day is a category sale, not a general one. Appliances and mattresses genuinely bottom out this weekend, and the haul-away bundled with an appliance is worth $50 to $150 on its own. Write down the model you want and its price now, before the sale hands you a number to compare against.
The percentage on the sign is the least useful number in the store. It is measured against a price the retailer chose, and sometimes against nothing at all.
Labor Day is real for a narrow set of categories and theatre for the rest. Appliances carry the steepest markdowns of the weekend, roughly 20% to 35% off refrigerators, dishwashers, ranges and over-the-range microwaves, usually bundled with delivery and haul-away of the old unit. That haul-away runs $50 to $150 in disposal fees nobody counts. Mattresses are the other genuine one, and the bundled extras thrown in over Labor Day frequently do not come back at Black Friday. Patio furniture, grills and summer stock are clearing for the season, so those discounts are structural rather than generous.
The skips are just as specific. Televisions, laptops and anything tied to a product cycle treat Labor Day as a marketing checkpoint, and the actual floor arrives in late November. Holiday toys and winter apparel behave the same way. Waiting eleven weeks on a television is arithmetic, not discipline.
One more trap is worth knowing. Retailers commission derivative model numbers that exist only for sale events, so the television on the floor is a near-twin of the one you researched, not the same set. Check the full model string rather than the family name.
So do the one thing that makes any of this measurable. This week, write down the specific model you want and what it costs today. When the sale opens you will be comparing against a number you recorded, instead of the one printed helpfully beside it.
