Buy Pet Insurance Before the First Diagnosis – or Build a Vet Fund

A golden puppy sits between two green bowls, one holding a document headed INSURANCE and the other heaped with gold coins.

Just the Tip:

Insure your dog or cat while it’s young and healthy, because most policies won’t cover a condition your pet already has. If you’d rather skip coverage, open a separate vet fund and transfer at least what a policy would cost into it every month.

Drifting into neither is how a surprise vet bill lands on a credit card. Put the decision off, and the first vet visit that finds a problem makes it for you.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) notes that most pet insurers exclude pre-existing conditions. Some also won’t accept pets past a certain age, many make you wait before benefits begin, and age is one of the variables premiums are priced on.

Buy while your pet is young and healthy, and there’s nothing on its record to exclude. Wait until after a diagnosis, and that condition is exactly what most policies leave out.

If you lean toward a policy, weigh its deductible, the percentage of each bill it reimburses, and its payout limit against the cash you’d otherwise have saved. With a $500 deductible and 80% of the rest reimbursed, for example, you’d pay $1,000 of a $3,000 vet bill. Then ask whether it covers hereditary and congenital conditions, the ones a pet inherits or is born with, which the NAIC says most insurers exclude.

For a price check, the North American Pet Health Insurance Association’s 2026 State of the Industry report puts the average U.S. accident-and-illness premium in 2025 at $836 a year for a dog and $435 for a cat. Accident-only coverage averaged $190 for a dog and $112 for a cat, but it pays nothing toward illness.

If you self-insure, keep the vet fund in its own savings account and set an automatic monthly transfer of at least the premium you’re skipping. By our math, saving the average dog premium, about $70 a month, takes about two years to build a $1,700 fund. A policy can pay for a covered illness once its waiting period ends, so self-insuring suits owners with other savings to cover a big bill in the meantime.

Either path is sound. Price a policy for your pet’s age and breed this week, and if you pass, set up the transfer that same day.
