Better Credit Won’t Lower Your Car Loan Rate – Refinancing Will

Just the Tip:

Your car loan’s rate reflects the credit score you had the day you signed. If your score has climbed into a higher range since then, or the dealer arranged your financing, refinance the balance. Keep the new term no longer than the months you have left.

A fixed rate doesn’t follow your score up. If you financed with fair credit or little credit history, steady on-time payments can lift your score into a better range while the loan keeps charging the old rate.

Dealer financing gives you a second reason to shop. Your lender quoted the dealer a rate, called the buy rate, and may have let the dealer raise it on your contract and keep a cut of the extra interest.

Auto loan rates fall in steps as your score rises, so the savings come from crossing into a better range. In Experian’s auto loan data, which uses VantageScore, near prime runs 601 to 660, prime 661 to 780, and super prime 781 and up. Used-car loans averaged 13.93% for near-prime borrowers and 8.81% for prime ones in the second quarter of 2026.

By our math, refinancing a $20,000 balance with 48 months left from 13.93% to 8.81% cuts the payment from about $546 to $496 and saves about $2,400 in interest. Stretch the new loan to 72 months, even at the same rate, and the payment drops to about $359, but the extra interest gives back about $2,000 of that saving.

Give the loan six months first, since some lenders won’t refinance sooner. Then get quotes from a credit union, your own bank, and an online lender within the same two weeks, so the credit checks count as a single inquiry.

Expect some refusals. Many lenders won’t refinance a car worth less than you owe on it, or one past their age or mileage limits. Before you sign the best offer, check your current loan contract for a prepayment penalty and ask the new lender about title and lien fees, which vary by state.

If no quote beats your current rate at the same remaining term, keep the loan you have and check again once your score reaches the next range.
