Your adult child has decades of paychecks ahead to pay down their debt, while you have far fewer working years left to rebuild the retirement savings a payoff would spend. Before you clear their balance, make sure your emergency fund is full and your retirement is on track.
Cashing out a 401k when you leave a job costs you income tax, usually a 10% penalty, and decades of growth. Left invested at a 7% average return, $10,000 at age 30 grows to about $107,000 by 65. Ask your old plan for a direct rollover into your new plan or an IRA instead.
Save in a 401(k) or IRA on a modest income, and you can get back up to half of your first $2,000. Claim the Saver’s Credit on your return through tax year 2026. From tax year 2027, claim the Saver’s Match instead, and the money goes into your retirement account whether or not you owe tax.

But when Baby Step 2 tells you to pause investing, keep contributing enough to your 401(k) to collect the full employer match. A match of 50% or more that’s yours to keep beats the interest a faster payoff saves.
If you’re married, file jointly, and one of you isn’t earning, a spousal IRA lets the working spouse’s income fund an IRA in the other spouse’s name. Open the account and fund it every year you’re down to one paycheck, because a year you skip can’t be made up once its tax deadline passes.
A target-date fund is a complete retirement portfolio you can buy in one step. Pick the fund dated closest to your planned retirement, check that its yearly fee is low, and then leave it alone. Adding other funds beside it undoes the mix it was built to manage.
You can withdraw what you’ve contributed to a Roth IRA at any time, for any reason, with no tax or penalty, because that money was taxed going in. Only its earnings wait, usually until age 59½. If fear of tying up cash has kept you out, open a Roth and log every contribution.
Social Security figures your benefit from its earnings record, not your pay stubs, so a year that never posted can lower every check. Pull your record from a my Social Security account and compare each year with your W-2s. Fix errors fast, since a year gets hard to correct after about three years.
A short college fund has backups like student loans, scholarships, and cheaper schools, while a short retirement fund leaves you working longer or living on less. Fund your own retirement first, starting with every dollar of your employer’s match, and put money toward college only after your retirement savings are on track.
To find your retirement number, estimate what you’ll spend in a year of retirement, subtract what Social Security or a pension will pay, and multiply the gap by 25. Savings of that size have historically supported withdrawals that start at 4% of the balance and rise with inflation for at least 30 years.
