Just the Tip:

Get the Sam’s Club® Mastercard® if you buy a lot of gas and shop at Sam’s Club, even as a new member. On $500 a month of gas, its 5% back pays $300 a year in Sam’s Cash, or $240 after a $60 Club membership. Skip it if you rarely shop there, since Sam’s Cash works only at Sam’s Club.

That $240 is still more than the $180 the Wells Fargo Autograph Card pays on the same gas, at 3 points per dollar worth a cent each, with no annual fee or membership. For a new member, the $60 fee costs more than the extra 2% earns below $250 a month of gas, and above $750 the Autograph’s uncapped points pay more than this card does.

Key Features

  • 5% in Sam’s Cash on gas and electric vehicle charging, on the first $6,000 each calendar year, then 1%
  • 3% on dining and takeout, 3% at Sam’s Club for Plus members (1% for Club members), and 1% on everything else
  • Sam’s Cash posted within one or two billing cycles, for club or online purchases, membership renewal, or cash at member services
  • No annual fee beyond the membership, $60 a year for Club or $120 for Plus; variable interest rate (APR) of 20.40% or 28.40%

Pros

  • 5% at almost any gas station on your first $6,000 a year, not only at Sam’s Club
  • Up to 5% at Sam’s Club for Plus members, counting Plus membership’s own 2% on in-club purchases
  • No minimum before you can spend Sam’s Cash

Cons

  • Sam’s Cash is good only at Sam’s Club, or as cash at a club up to a limit Sam’s Club sets
  • Unspent Sam’s Cash is forfeited if your membership ends
  • Only 1% on gas past $6,000 a year
  • Fuel from a supermarket’s pumps may earn just 1%
  • Applicants not approved for it are considered for the Sam’s Club Credit Card, which earns no Sam’s Cash

Drivers who shop at Sam’s Club get the most from it, current members most of all, since the card costs them nothing beyond the membership they already pay. If you rarely shop there, take the Wells Fargo Autograph Card instead, since its points can be redeemed as a credit to a Wells Fargo card or checking account.
