State Student Loan Repayment Can Sweeten a Job or Move – Don’t Let It Decide

Just the Tip:

State programs help repay student loans for many nurses, doctors, teachers, and lawyers in hard-to-fill jobs, and sometimes for people who move to the state. Before you take a job or plan a move, check what the state offers and the strings attached, then make sure the choice works without the money.

The programs are scattered across state agencies and foundations, so they rarely come up when you weigh a job by its salary or a move by its rent.

Most are tied to the job. States use federal grants from the State Loan Repayment Program to repay loans for primary care doctors, nurses, dentists, and mental health clinicians who commit at least two years to a shortage area. Which jobs qualify varies by state. Teachers in hard-to-fill subjects or rural districts can find state programs too, and the American Bar Association keeps a list of statewide programs for lawyers in public interest jobs.

Programs for new residents are rarer than job-tied ones, and they come and go. Through its Rural Opportunity Zones program, Kansas put up to $15,000 over five years toward the student loans of people who moved to rural counties, then stopped taking new applicants on June 30, 2026. Maine’s tax credit for student loan payments is still running. Residents who earn about $14,000 or more from work can claim up to $2,500 a year of their payments, $25,000 in all, on loans for degrees earned after 2007 at any accredited school. The credit pays out even if they owe no Maine income tax.

Start with the state’s higher education agency and health department, and ask HR at the hospital, school district, or legal aid office you’re weighing which programs the job qualifies for. Then check the strings attached. Ask how many years you must serve and what happens if you leave early. Awards also depend on funding, and Minnesota’s teacher program, for one, says it may not fund every eligible applicant. Health care programs for shortage areas pay tax-free under IRS rules, but other programs’ payments can count as taxable income.

Last, price the job or the move as if no program existed. Relocation money runs a few thousand dollars a year, and a program can close to new applicants before you arrive, as Kansas’s did. Go ahead only if the choice still wins without the money, and count any award as a bonus.
