Just the Tip:

If you bank with TD and spend on travel and dining, open the TD First Class℠ Visa Signature® Credit Card for 3 miles per dollar and no annual fee the first year. Before the $89 fee starts, compare no-fee national cards that earn the same rate, and keep it only if you want a TD rewards card for trips abroad.

TD Bank’s travel card, offered only in 15 East Coast states from Maine to Florida plus Washington, D.C., pays in miles worth a penny each as cash back. On TD’s own example of $500 a month on travel and dining plus $1,000 on everything else, you’d earn 30,000 miles a year, worth $300.

Key Features

  • $89 annual fee, waived in year one
  • 3 miles per dollar on travel and dining, including flights, hotels, car rentals, and cruises; 1 mile per dollar on everything else
  • 15,000 bonus miles after your first purchase, plus 10,000 more after $3,000 in purchases within the first six billing cycles
  • Miles worth at least a penny each for cash back or travel; cash back starts at 2,500 miles, as a statement credit or a deposit to a TD account
  • 16.74% variable interest rate (APR) on purchases; 0% intro APR for 12 billing cycles on balance transfers made in the first 90 days, with a 3% fee ($5 minimum)

Pros

  • The equivalent of 3% back on both travel and dining, with no cap on miles
  • No foreign transaction fee, while TD’s other rewards cards add 3% to foreign purchases
  • A fee-free first year to earn the 25,000-mile bonus, worth $250
  • Lost luggage reimbursement and travel accident insurance on fares you charge to the card

Cons

  • $89 a year from the second year on, which would cut that $300 to $211
  • No airline or hotel transfer partners, travel credits, or rental car coverage
  • Wells Fargo’s Autograph, sold nationwide, earns the same 3 points per dollar on restaurants and travel, at a penny a point, with no annual fee

After year one, the card is worth its $89 mainly to TD customers who travel abroad and want to keep their cards at TD. If you’d rather earn cash back, the no-annual-fee TD Cash card lets you choose dining or travel as its 3% category.
