Get the U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card if two of its 5% categories match what you already spend on, such as utility or phone bills, and you’ll pick them every quarter. Skip it if you want one rate with nothing to manage, since anything outside your picks earns just 1%.
U.S. Bank says the Cash+ is generally for people with good to excellent credit, and the U.S. Bank Cash+ Secured Visa pays the same rates to people building credit. If you were looking for the Shopper Cash Rewards card, U.S. Bank no longer offers it.
Key Features
- No annual fee, and a $200 bonus for spending $1,000 in your first 90 days
- 5% on up to $2,000 of spending a quarter across the two categories you pick, then 1%
- The 12 choices for 5%, which can change each quarter: home utilities; cell phone providers; TV, internet, and streaming; fast food; department stores; electronics stores; furniture stores; sporting goods stores; select clothing stores; movie theaters; gyms; and ground transportation
- 2% on your choice of grocery stores, restaurants, or gas stations and electric vehicle charging
- 0% interest for 15 billing cycles on purchases and on balances transferred in the first 60 days, then a variable rate of 17.99% to 28.24%
Pros
- 5% choices for monthly bills like utilities, phone plans, and streaming
- Ground transportation as a 5% choice, covering taxis, buses, trains, and car services like Uber
- 5% on prepaid flights, hotels, and rental cars booked through U.S. Bank’s Travel Center
- Picks open 45 days before each quarter, with free text or email reminders you can sign up for
Cons
- Every purchase earns 1% until three business days after you pick that quarter’s categories
- 1% on purchases outside your picks and past the $2,000 cap, half what a flat 2% card pays
- Groceries and gas at supercenters like Walmart and Target, or at wholesale clubs, earn 1%
- 3% fee on foreign transactions
A household that picks home utilities and cell phone and spends $500 a month on those bills earns $75 a quarter, $45 more than a flat 2% card pays. Anyone who wants one rate with nothing to manage should get the U.S. Bank Smartly Visa Signature, which pays 2% on every purchase, and people who spend mostly on dining should look at the U.S. Bank Altitude Go.
