Get the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card if you spend at least $1,500 a year each on hotels and flights booked directly. It pays 5 points per dollar on hotels and 4 on airfare, where the no-fee Autograph pays 3. At 1 cent a point, the extra covers the $95 fee minus its $50 airline credit.
Wells Fargo’s travel card out-earns the no-fee Wells Fargo Autograph Card only on what you pay hotels and airlines directly. Points are worth 1 cent each as cash, so each $100 spent that way earns $2 more with a hotel and $1 more with an airline.
Key Features
- $95 annual fee, with a $50 statement credit each year on your first airline purchase of $50 or more
- 5 points per dollar spent directly with hotels and 4 with airlines, 3 on restaurants and other travel such as car rentals and cruises, and 1 on everything else
- Welcome bonus of 60,000 points, worth $600, after $4,000 in purchases in the first 3 months
- Points worth 1 cent each as cash or toward a trip, and transferable to airline partners one for one, such as JetBlue TrueBlue
- No foreign transaction fee, and a variable APR of 19.74%, 25.74%, or 28.74%, depending on your credit
Pros
- Trip cancellation and interruption coverage of up to $15,000 per traveler when the card pays for the whole trip
- Up to $3,000 per trip for bags a carrier loses to theft or misdirection, when the card paid the fare
- Up to $1,000 per claim in cell phone protection, with a $25 deductible, when the card pays your monthly phone bill
- Unlimited points that don’t expire while the account is open
Cons
- Hotels booked through Expedia or another travel site earn 3 points per dollar, not 5
- 1 point per dollar on gas, transit, streaming, and phone plans, which earn 3 on the Autograph
- Trip cancellation, lost baggage, and U.S. rental car coverage are secondary, paying only what other coverage doesn’t
- Bonus points may not post on purchases paid with a mobile or digital wallet
Travelers who book $1,500 a year each in hotel stays and airfare directly earn back the $45 the card costs after its airline credit. If you book through travel sites or spend less than that, the no-fee Autograph comes out ahead, with 3 points on travel, gas, transit, streaming, and phone plans.
