Your Credit Card Can Insure Your Phone – If It Pays the Bill

Just the Tip:

Cell phone protection on many credit cards covers theft and damage to every phone on your wireless bill, as long as that card pays the bill. Check your card’s guide to benefits, move the bill to a card that has it, and drop the carrier’s plan unless you need lost-phone coverage.

Find the carrier’s protection plan on your wireless bill. It costs up to about $25 a month per phone, and a family of four paying $15 a line spends $720 a year on it.

A card’s coverage costs nothing extra. Common terms run from $600 per claim with a $25 deductible to $1,000 with a $100 deductible, for two or three claims a year. Two claims in a bad year cost $50 to $200 in deductibles, while the carrier’s plan charges $720 a year before its own.

The coverage has gaps. It excludes lost phones and damage that doesn’t affect how the phone works. Payouts also stop at the cap, so a stolen $1,200 phone gets $575 at most on a card with a $600 cap and a $25 deductible. Carrier plans cover loss and replace the phone for a set deductible.

Pull up the guide to benefits on your issuer’s site, or ask for a copy at the phone number on your card. Search it for cell phone protection by name, since purchase protection is a separate benefit that covers new things you buy with the card. Check even a card you’ve carried for years, because the Chase Freedom Flex lost this benefit on September 20, 2026.

Then put the full monthly bill on autopay with that card. Coverage starts only after a payment posts, and at some issuers not until the next month, so keep the carrier’s plan until then.

When a phone breaks or is stolen, report it within the guide’s deadline, often 60 days. Keep the phone bill and card statement that show the payment, a police report for a theft, and a repair estimate.

If your phones cost less than the card’s cap and nobody in the house tends to lose one, move the bill this week and cancel the carrier’s plan once the card’s coverage starts.
