Get the Wise Multi-Currency Card if you spend, hold, or get paid in other currencies. Spending a currency you hold costs nothing. For any other currency, Wise uses the mid-market rate, the one Google shows, and charges about 0.3% to convert dollars to euros or pounds. Skip it if you only travel abroad once or twice a year.
Get the BILL Divvy Card if several people spend for your business and you want budgets, virtual cards, and receipt tracking without paying for software. Don’t get it for the rewards. Its points are worth about half a cent each, and you lose a month’s points if you charge less than 30% of your credit line that month.
In your 30s, push the share of your pay you save for retirement toward 15%, counting any employer match, by adding half of every raise to your contribution. Keep most of that money in stocks, and don’t cut those contributions to pay for a house or the kids’ college.
Get Acorns Early, formerly GoHenry, if your family pays for Acorns Gold, which includes the kids’ card, chore tracking, and lessons at no extra cost. Without Gold, its Lite plan costs $8 a month, so compare cheaper kids’ debit cards before you sign up.
You buy at a stock quote’s ask, the lowest price a seller will take, and sell at its bid, the highest a buyer will pay. The gap between them costs you the moment you buy, and it’s usually widest on stocks that trade few shares. When it’s wide, use a limit order to set the most you’ll pay.
Get the Chase Sapphire Preferred if you want a credit line of at least $5,000 for a $95 annual fee, and add an American Express card with no preset spending limit once you need more room. Your income, debts, and credit still decide how much room you get on either one.
Money you invest in your 20s has about 40 years to grow, so small amounts go far. Contribute enough to your 401(k) to get the full employer match, open a Roth IRA while your tax rate is low, and invest both accounts mostly in stocks through a target-date or broad stock index fund.
Get the Business Edition® Visa® Card with Absolute Rewards® if you bank with Flagstar and want to move another bank’s card balance, since it gives 12 billing cycles at 0% on transfers and purchases. Without a balance to move, a no-fee card paying 2% on your first $50,000 a year beats this card’s 1.5% until your spending passes $100,000.
Free stock from a broker is real money, but a sign-up share is often worth a few dollars. The broker you pick may hold your investments for decades. Shortlist online brokers by their costs, the funds they sell, and the account you need, then take a free-stock offer only from a broker on your shortlist.
Get the Business Advantage Unlimited Cash Rewards Mastercard® Credit Card if your business keeps a combined $50,000 or more at Bank of America and Merrill. Enrolling in the bank’s Preferred Rewards for Business program lifts the card’s 1.5% cash back to at least 2.25% on every purchase. With less banked there, a no-fee card paying a flat 2% earns more.
