The mileage on a shop’s windshield sticker rarely matches your carmaker’s oil change schedule. Look up the interval in your owner’s manual, or follow your car’s oil-life monitor if it has one. On most newer cars, that interval runs thousands of miles past the old 3,000-mile rule.

Before you visit a dealership, get a car loan pre-approval from a bank or credit union. A dealer who arranges your financing can mark up the rate the lender approved and keep part of the difference. Walk in with a pre-approval, and the dealer has a rate to beat.
Your car loan’s rate reflects the credit score you had the day you signed. If your score has climbed into a higher range since then, or the dealer arranged your financing, get refinance quotes and take one that beats your rate. Keep the new term no longer than the months you have left.
