Charging a Car Down Payment Earns Rewards – If No Fee or Interest Erases Them

Just the Tip:

Putting part of your car down payment on a credit card can earn rewards, and a single charge can cover a new card’s sign-up bonus requirement. Ask the dealer how much it accepts by card, and whether it adds a fee, before you negotiate. Then pay the card in full, or interest will erase the rewards.

Most cards that offer a sign-up bonus ask for $500 to $5,000 in spending, usually within three months of opening the account. A $5,000 charge at the dealership meets that requirement in one transaction, with money you were going to spend on the car anyway.

Dealers limit card payments because every credit card sale costs them roughly 2% to 3% in processing fees. Many cap the amount, often at a few thousand dollars, and others pass the cost to you as a separate fee. A dealer that hears about the card only at signing can refuse it or add the fee to a price you’ve already agreed on.

A fee can cost more than the card earns. On a $5,000 charge, a 3% fee is $150, while a card paying 2% back returns $100. Pay a fee only when the charge also qualifies you for a bonus worth more than the fee.

Line up the card before you go. If you’re financing the rest of the car, get approved for the auto loan before you apply for a new card, so the card’s credit check can’t lower the score the lender sees. Then make sure the card’s limit covers the charge, and call the issuer, whose fraud checks can decline a purchase that size.

After the purchase, pay the full balance by the due date, and never leave part of the down payment on the card to pay off over time. Going by Federal Reserve data, credit card rates run about three times what banks charge on new-car loans.

The charge also raises your utilization, the share of your card limits in use, when the issuer reports your statement balance. If you’ll apply for a mortgage or another loan soon, pay the card off before the statement closes.

Charge only what you could pay from savings today, and the down payment earns you rewards instead of costing you interest.
