Cosigning a loan makes the whole debt yours. The lender can collect from you, and other lenders can count it as your debt when you borrow, even if the borrower never misses a payment. Before you sign for a child, partner, or friend, make sure you could cover every payment yourself without strain.
Your card issuer can close a credit card you stop using, and it doesn’t have to warn you first. Losing that card’s limit can lower your credit score. Keep each idle no-fee card open by moving one small subscription you already pay onto it, with autopay set to the full statement balance so it costs nothing extra.
A credit-builder loan is worth its small cost in interest and any fees if you can make every payment on time. The lender locks the money in savings while your payments build a credit history, then releases it after the last one. Pick one whose payments reach all three credit bureaus, and set up autopay.
Applying with several lenders for the same mortgage, auto loan, or student loan costs your credit score no more than applying with one, as long as you apply within a short window. Scoring models count those inquiries as one. Line up every lender before you apply, then send every application within 14 days of the first.

Paying credit card interest never raises your credit score. Scores see the balance on your statement and whether you paid on time, and newer ones count a balance you roll over against you. Use your card, then pay the full statement balance by the due date every month to build credit without paying interest.
You can pull your credit reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion for free every week at AnnualCreditReport.com, and checking your own report doesn’t affect your score. Make it a weekly habit so a fraudulent account or a costly mistake surfaces within a week instead of sitting there until your next yearly look.
Credit utilization, the share of your credit card limits you’re using, is one of the biggest factors in your credit score. Keep it under 30% on every card and overall, and aim for under 10%. Because issuers usually report your statement balance, pay your cards down a few days before each statement closes.
