Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card
Our Rating
4/5

Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card

  • Best for: Delta flyers who will use a yearly companion certificate and want progress toward Medallion status
  • What Sets It Apart: Yearly Delta Main companion certificate; $2,500 Medallion Qualification Dollars each year; up to $390 a year in statement credits
  • Cost: $350 annual fee; no foreign transaction fees; 19.74% to 28.74% variable interest rate
  • Features: 3 miles per dollar on Delta and direct hotel purchases; 2 per dollar at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets; free first checked bag and Zone 5 boarding for up to 9 travelers on your reservation; free second bag for you on domestic trips
  • Pros: Certificate can cover the fee in one trip; head start on Medallion status; credits for Delta Stays, Resy, and rideshares
  • Cons: First certificate arrives after year one; certificate limited to certain Delta Main fares; miles worth about 1 cent each; no Sky Club access

Just the Tip:

Get the Delta SkyMiles Platinum Amex only if you’ll use its companion certificate on a trip you’d take anyway. Your companion’s Delta Main round trip then costs just taxes and fees, so one trip can cover the $350 fee. If not, the Delta Gold card has the same free bags for $150 a year instead of $350.

The Platinum sits between the Gold and the Reserve in Delta’s Amex lineup, for travelers who fly Delta several times a year and want a head start on Medallion elite status. Business owners can get a Platinum Business version.

Key Features

  • $350 annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, and a 19.74% to 28.74% variable interest rate on purchase balances you carry
  • Up to 90,000 bonus miles plus a $300 credit after $4,000 in purchases in 6 months, for applications through Nov. 4, 2026
  • 3 miles per dollar spent with Delta and at hotels you pay directly, 2 at restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, and 1 elsewhere
  • A companion certificate after each renewal, for a second traveler on your Delta Main (economy) round trip within the U.S. or to Mexico, Central America, or the Caribbean
  • Free first checked bag and Zone 5 priority boarding for you and up to 8 companions on your reservation

Pros

  • A certificate that covers the $350 fee on any domestic trip where the companion’s ticket would cost $430 or more, after up to $80 in taxes and fees
  • $2,500 in Medallion Qualification Dollars each year, half the $5,000 needed for 2026 Silver Medallion status, plus $1 more per $20 you spend
  • Up to $390 a year in credits, from $150 for Delta Stays hotel bookings and $10 a month each for Resy restaurants and rideshares
  • A free second checked bag for you on domestic trips, normally $55 each way

Cons

  • No certificate in year one, since the first arrives after your first renewal
  • Certificate limited to certain Delta Main fares, never Basic Economy, and good for about a year
  • Miles worth about a penny each through Delta’s Pay with Miles, so everyday spending returns about 1%
  • No Delta Sky Club lounge access, which comes with the $650 Reserve

The Platinum is worth it for Delta regulars who will use the certificate every year. For free bags alone, the Gold gives you the same ones for $150 a year instead of $350, after a $0 first year.
