Negotiating Your Monthly Bills Takes One Phone Call and Often Works

A cream telephone handset whose coiled cord forms blades slicing a long phone bill, the cut strip drifting away.

Just the Tip:

Your internet, phone, and credit card bills are more negotiable than they look, and most people who ask for a better deal get one. Call each provider with a competitor’s price in hand, say you’re ready to switch, and ask what they can do to keep you.

Your bargaining power is that you can leave. Providers know it, and the reps who handle cancellations have the authority to cut your price to keep you.

Asking works far more often than it fails. In a 2018 Consumer Reports survey of more than 176,000 of its members, 70% had tried to negotiate with their TV, internet, or phone provider at some point, and 80% of them got at least one perk. Among those who tried, nearly a third landed a new promotional rate, and about a quarter cut their pay-TV bill by as much as $50 a month.

Credit card issuers usually say yes too. In a 2025 LendingTree survey, 83% of cardholders who requested a lower interest rate within the past year got one, and 95% of those who asked for an annual fee waiver or reduction got it.

Before you dial, pull your latest statement and look up what a competitor charges new customers for the same service. Then make the call:

  • Call on a weekday and skip online chat. Ben Kurland, co-founder of the bill-negotiation service BillFixers, says chat reps at most companies can’t offer the best discounts.
  • Say you’re ready to switch or cut back, and quote the competitor’s price. That moves your call up to a rep with more authority to lower the bill.
  • Turn down the first offer. Reps tend to lead with their weakest deal and improve it when you say no.
  • Once the price works for you, ask how long it lasts and have the rep email you the new terms.
  • If the rep won’t budge, thank them, hang up, and call back another day.

Promotional rates expire, and the bill jumps back to full price when they do. Set a reminder for a month before yours runs out, and make the same call again.
