Barclays issues this Visa for Princess Cruises passengers, and its points pay for Princess sailings, onboard spending, and flights. Carnival and Holland America passengers have Barclays cards of their own.

  • 20,000 bonus points after $1,000 in purchases within the first 90 days, worth $200 in onboard credit
  • 2 points per $1 on Princess purchases, onboard spending included, and 1 point per $1 on everything else
  • Points worth 1 cent each as onboard credit, or as statement credits against charges from the past 180 days
  • Statement credits that cover Princess, Carnival, Holland America, Cunard, and four other cruise lines, plus airline charges of $50 or more

Pros

  • A welcome bonus that works out to 20% back on the first $1,000 in purchases
  • No foreign transaction fees in foreign ports
  • Trip cancellation, trip interruption, and baggage delay coverage on the standard Visa Signature version
  • Points that don’t expire while the account stays open and in good standing
  • 0% interest for 15 billing cycles on balance transfers made in the first 45 days, with a fee of 5% (at least $5)

Cons

  • Just 1 point per $1 on purchases outside Princess, including other cruise lines and airfare
  • Only 1 point per $1 on Princess purchases made through third parties, such as resellers
  • Gift cards at 3,300 points for $25, which works out to about 0.76 cent a point against 1 cent for onboard or statement credits

Open it early enough for the bonus to post before onboard credit requests close, 15 days before your Princess sailing. After that, Princess regulars who don’t need trip cancellation coverage do better with the no-annual-fee Wells Fargo Autograph Card, which pays 3 points per $1 on Princess fares while this card pays 2, at a cent a point on both.
