USAA launched the Eagle Adapt in July 2026, and its lineup no longer includes the USAA Rewards American Express card or its military affiliate cards. Only USAA members can apply, and free membership is open to current service members, veterans who served honorably, their spouses, and members’ children.

Key Features

  • 3% cash back on up to $3,000 of combined spending each calendar quarter in eight categories: dining, gas and EV charging, groceries, drugstores and gyms, home improvement and furnishings, live entertainment and streaming, transit, and travel
  • 1% on everything else, including category purchases past the cap
  • $200 bonus after $1,000 in purchases by January 31, 2027
  • No annual fee or foreign transaction fee
  • Interest rate on purchases of 0% through the May 2028 billing cycle, then a variable rate of 15.40% to 27.40%

Pros

  • All eight categories earn 3% automatically, with nothing to pick or activate
  • USAA caps the rate at 4% if you’re called to active duty after opening the card
  • No penalty interest rate after a late payment
  • Cell phone protection up to $500, as long as the card pays your phone bill

Cons

  • The 3% covers only $3,000 of spending a quarter, about $1,000 a month
  • Costco, Sam’s Club, and some discount stores don’t count as grocery stores
  • Only 1% outside the eight categories and past the cap, so pairing it with a no-fee 2% card doubles what the rest earns
  • No category for purchases on base, where USAA’s Cashback Rewards Plus pays 5% on the first $5,000 a year

The Eagle Adapt is worth getting for members whose card spending goes mostly to groceries, gas, dining, and its other categories, up to $3,000 a quarter, since all of that earns 3%. By our math, the flat 1.5% Preferred Cash Rewards card earns more than the Eagle Adapt only for members who charge over $12,000 a quarter, or whose spending in these categories is under a fourth of their total.
