Get the BJ’s One® Mastercard® if you shop and buy gas at BJ’s most weeks. It pays 3% back in BJ’s rewards there, more than a 2% cash back card, and takes 10 cents off each gallon at BJ’s Gas. If BJ’s is an occasional stop, skip it, since a 2% card pays more everywhere else.
Capital One issues the card to BJ’s members with a standard Club membership, which generally costs $60 a year. Club+ members get the BJ’s One+ instead, which pays 5% back at BJ’s and takes 15 cents off each gallon at BJ’s Gas.
Key Features
- No annual fee and a variable interest rate of 19.99% or 28.49%, based on your credit
- 3% back on most purchases in BJ’s clubs, on BJs.com, and in the BJ’s app
- 1.5% back on purchases outside BJ’s
- 10 cents off each gallon at BJ’s Gas when you pay with the card and scan your membership card
- Rewards that post to your BJ’s account each month and never expire while the card stays open
Pros
- 3% back in BJ’s rewards at BJ’s, versus 2% cash back from a flat-rate card
- 10 cents off each gallon, worth more than 2% back whenever gas costs under $5 a gallon
- Rewards can pay your yearly BJ’s membership fee
- Up to four authorized users, whose purchases earn rewards too
- No foreign transaction fee
Cons
- 1.5% back outside BJ’s, less than the 2% a flat-rate card pays
- Rewards spendable only at BJ’s, and only once you have $10
- No rewards on BJ’s Gas, alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, or sales tax
- No sign-up bonus
- Opening the card signs your membership up to renew automatically, billed to the card, unless you opt out
A family that puts $150 a week of eligible BJ’s purchases on the card earns $234 a year in BJ’s rewards, compared with $156 in cash back from a 2% card. Weekly BJ’s shoppers should pair it with a 2% card for everything else, and members who shop there a few times a year should skip it.
