Money left in your health care flexible spending account (FSA) after the plan’s deadline is lost, so look up the date now. Some plans add a grace period or a small carryover, and some offer neither. Then spend the balance on care and supplies you’d pay for anyway, such as an eye exam or new glasses.
If you were eligible for a health savings account (HSA) last year and didn’t reach the contribution limit, you can still contribute for last year until the tax filing deadline, usually April 15. Tell your HSA provider the deposit is a prior-year contribution, then claim the deduction on last year’s return, even if you don’t itemize.
Put HealthSpring’s Medicare Supplement plans on your quote list if price comes first. Its Plan G for a 65-year-old woman came in below the median policy in all three markets we checked, and 2nd of 41 in Columbus. The company issuing them there is new to Medigap, with little complaint history yet.
Choose an AARP Medicare Supplement plan if you want the largest Medigap insurer, sold in every state, with fewer complaints than its size predicts. Don’t judge it by the price at 65, though. That price carries an enrollment discount that shrinks after 68, so ask what you’ll pay at 75 before you apply.
Get a State Farm Medigap quote if you want a local agent to handle your application and an insurer that draws few complaints. It offers no household discount, so couples should price it against insurers that do. Before you apply, ask the agent about your state’s latest rate increase.
Urgent care treats sprains, cuts that need stitches, and sinus and urinary tract infections for a fraction of what an emergency room charges, and your share of the bill is often smaller too. Look up the in-network urgent care centers near you now, so a weekend injury doesn’t send your family to the ER by default.
Treat Aetna’s Medicare Supplement plans as your second quote, not your first. For a 65-year-old woman, its Plan G ranked in the pricier half of every market we checked, and its Texas insurer drew 46% more complaints than expected in 2025. The exception is Phoenix, where its high-deductible Plan G ranks near the cheapest and premiums don’t rise with age.
Cancer, critical-illness, and accident policies pay only for the diseases or injuries they list. Before you buy one, compare your health plan’s out-of-pocket maximum with your savings. Then put that premium toward cash that covers a year’s maximum and disability insurance that replaces your paycheck, since neither depends on which illness or injury you get.
Medicare open enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, and if you do nothing, your drug plan usually renews with whatever your insurer changed for next year. Enter your prescriptions and pharmacy in Medicare’s Plan Finder and compare total yearly costs, not just premiums. If another plan’s total yearly cost is lower than your plan’s, switch by December 7.
Letting your health plan roll over at open enrollment means buying next year’s coverage without checking next year’s prices. Before the window closes, add 12 months of each option’s premiums to what you’d expect to pay out of pocket, and compare the totals. Then confirm your doctors and prescriptions are still covered.
