Pay the Statement Balance, Not the Minimum, and Your Card Stays Interest-Free

Just the Tip:

Most credit cards charge no interest on purchases as long as you pay the full statement balance by its due date. Pay even a dollar less and the unpaid part starts collecting interest, often at 20% a year or more. Make that full amount your payment every month, even when the minimum looks easier.

The minimum looks easier because your bill labels it the payment due, but paying it only keeps the account in good standing. What keeps the card free of interest is the statement balance, the total you owed on the day your billing cycle closed.

The grace period is why. It’s the window from the day a billing cycle closes to the payment due date. Most cards have one, and issuers must mail or deliver your bill at least 21 days before it’s due. Newer charges, the ones pushing your app’s current balance higher, wait for next month’s bill with a grace period of their own, so there’s no need to pay them yet.

Leave any of the statement balance unpaid and the interest doesn’t stop at the leftover. You can lose the grace period for that month and the next, so new purchases collect interest from the day you buy. At 24% a year, carrying $2,000 costs about $40 in interest the first month. That’s a year of 1% cash back on $4,000 of spending, gone in one bill.

Make it automatic. In your card’s autopay settings, choose the statement balance instead of the minimum or a fixed amount, and set the payment date on or before the due date. Keep enough in checking to cover it, and a busy month never turns into interest.

And don’t leave a small balance on purpose to help your credit score. Carrying a balance doesn’t raise it.

Pay in full every month and you keep whatever cash back, purchase protection, or fraud protection your card offers without paying a cent of interest.
