Just the Tip:

Get the Capital One Savor Student Cash Rewards Credit Card if a quarter or more of your spending goes to grocery stores, dining, entertainment, and streaming. It pays 3% cash back on all four with no annual fee. Below that share, a student card paying a flat 1.5% on everything earns more.

The Savor Student is a Capital One cash back card for college students, launched in 2021 as the SavorOne Rewards for Students. It needs no credit score to apply, so it can be the card you start building credit with.

Key Features

  • 3% cash back in four categories: dining, entertainment, popular streaming services, and grocery stores, plus 1% on everything else
  • 8% on Capital One Entertainment tickets and 5% on Capital One Travel bookings of hotels, vacation rentals, and rental cars (the bank runs both sites)
  • $50 bonus after you spend $100 on purchases in your first 3 months
  • $0 annual fee, no fee on purchases made outside the U.S., and a variable interest rate (APR) of 18.74%, 24.74%, or 28.74%, depending on your credit
  • For students 18 and older enrolled at an accredited university, a community college, or another higher education school, or admitted to one and enrolling within three months

Pros

  • No cap on the 3% cash back
  • Rewards that don’t expire while the account is open and can be redeemed in any amount
  • An eligibility check that shows your offers without affecting your credit score
  • Stays yours after graduation as long as you pay at least the minimum on time, with the same rates as Capital One’s regular Savor

Cons

  • Only 1% on gas, half the 2% the Discover it Student Chrome pays on its first $1,000 a quarter spent at gas stations and restaurants combined
  • 1% on groceries from superstores like Walmart and Target, warehouse clubs, discount stores, and convenience stores
  • 1% on college sports tickets billed as university purchases rather than as entertainment
  • No 0% intro APR on purchases or on balances moved from another card

By our math, students who put more than a quarter of their everyday spending into the 3% categories, such as $150 of $500 a month, earn more here than with a no-fee card paying a flat 1.5%. Students who put less than a quarter there earn more with Capital One’s Quicksilver Student, which pays 1.5% on every purchase.
