Debt Stress Relief Starts With a Written Plan, Not the Payoff

Paper money and credit cards stream out of a navy head silhouette and settle in three rows on a checklist page

Just the Tip:

Debt stress doesn’t have to last as long as your debt does. Write a payoff plan this week that lists every balance, picks one payoff method, and puts every payment on autopay. The worry often eases once the plan exists, months or years before you pay the last dollar. If you can’t afford the minimums, call a nonprofit credit counselor.

Lying awake running numbers, arguing about money, and headaches that won’t quit are signs of debt stress. In a February 2026 Achieve and Money.com survey of 2,000 U.S. adults who manage their household’s money, half said they felt anxious or on edge about their finances. Nearly half, 49%, said debt and money stress had cost them sleep in the past year.

Naming those symptoms matters, because it tells you what to fix. You can’t pay off the debt this week, but you can give it a plan.

Unfinished goals tend to keep intruding on your thoughts until they have a plan. A 2011 study in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that making a specific plan for an unfinished goal cut people’s intrusive thoughts about it before the goal was met. A written payoff plan is that kind of plan for your debt.

Build yours in four steps:

  1. List every debt on one page with its lender, balance, interest rate, minimum payment, and due date.
  2. Pick one payoff method. The avalanche (highest rate first) costs the least in interest, and the snowball (smallest balance first) clears an account soonest.
  3. Put every minimum on autopay so you never miss one, and schedule any extra payment for the debt your method targets.
  4. Check in once a week for 15 minutes to confirm the payments posted, then leave the balances alone until the next check-in.

If the minimums alone don’t fit your budget, call a nonprofit credit counselor. Counseling at a reputable agency is free or low cost. The counselor may also set up a debt management plan, which can cut your interest rates and roll your payments into one monthly payment to the agency. If the worry costs you sleep most nights or shows up as headaches or stomach trouble, see a doctor or therapist, because the stress has become a health problem too.

Start the list tonight and have the plan on autopay by the weekend. The balances won’t move by Monday, but you won’t have to carry them around in your head.
