Before you carry a single box into a new rental, take photos and video of every room, including damage that’s already there, and send copies to your landlord that day. That dated record is your proof if the landlord later tries to charge your security deposit for a stain or scratch you didn’t cause.
Sort last month’s spending into needs and wants, count whatever’s left as savings, and divide each total by your after-tax income. The 50/30/20 rule puts the benchmarks at 50%, 30%, and 20%. If needs run over 50% or wants over 30%, that bucket is where your missing savings went, so fix it before you cut anything else.
Your employer can withhold federal tax on a bonus at a flat 22%, but the bonus is taxed at your regular rates, just like salary. Below the 22% bracket, some of that withholding comes back at tax time. Above it, the flat rate withholds less than you’ll owe, so update your W-4 when bonuses are large or regular.
Many money apps aren’t banks, and FDIC insurance pays only when an insured bank fails. If the app or a middleman goes under, you could wait months for your money. Check which bank holds yours, and keep bill money and your emergency fund in an account you opened directly at an insured bank or credit union.
Divide your closing costs by your monthly savings to find how many months until refinancing pays for itself. If that’s 24 months or less, refinance. Just factor in the extra years of interest if you’re resetting a 30-year clock on a loan you’ve already paid down, because a lower rate doesn’t always mean a lower total cost.
Measure your emergency fund in months of bare-bones bills, the housing, groceries, insurance, and debt minimums you’d still pay after a job loss. Total them, then multiply by three if two stable incomes support you, or by six or more if you rely on one income or irregular pay. The result usually lands well below a paycheck-based target.
Unclaimed money in your name, like a refund check or utility deposit that never reached you, ends up with a state government, often one you’ve since moved away from. Search the official unclaimed property site of every state you’ve lived in, under every name you’ve used, and claim it from the state at no cost.
If one parent stays home with your kids, put life insurance on that parent too. Losing them would leave you paying for the childcare, driving, and housework they handle now, often for a decade or more. Price that work, multiply by the years until your youngest is grown, and buy term life insurance that covers the total for those years.
A 401(k) loan’s interest goes back into your own account, so the rate looks harmless. The real costs are the market gains the borrowed money misses and the tax bill if you leave your job before the loan is repaid. Before you borrow, try an emergency fund, a 0% balance transfer, or a credit union loan.
When your teen driver goes on your car insurance policy, ask for the good student discount at the same time and send a recent report card or transcript. Many insurers cut your premium for a B average or better, but they can’t apply the discount until they see the grades.
