Money Crashers Redesign and Digital Video Camera Giveaway

By Money Crashers

Welcome to the newly redesigned Money Crashers site! We’ve been hard at work over the past few months trying to make the site bigger and better for all of you.

The most drastic change you’ll notice is that we have now categorized the site to make it much easier to navigate. We also added some new sections to the home page and gave each category its own personal home page. Lastly, we’ve done some new stuff with the layout of the site and the color scheme. We hope you like it!

As part of our redesign, we’re going to give away a sweet Mustek DV326L Digital Video Camera. To enter the Giveaway, all you need to do is leave a comment below with your feedback on the redesigned site. After all, the site is designed for you and we want to get your thoughts.

In case you don’t remember, below are partial screen shots of the old and new layouts:

Old Site

New Site

What do you think about the site layout? Any new categories you would like to see? Any other ideas for us to incorporate into the redesigned site? Any ideas in general that you would like to see on Money Crashers in the future?

Any and all feedback/thoughts are welcome. We’ll choose one lucky commenter and announce the winner next Monday, September 13th, 2010. Be sure to check back on this post for the winner so that we can get in touch with you and send the prize. Good luck!

Looking forward to seeing your feedback!

Update (Sept 14, 2010): The winner of the digital video camera is Boba Nerd for the insightful comment left in the section below.  Congrats! Thanks to everyone for all of the great feedback! We’ll be taking everything into consideration over the next few weeks and working hard to improve and make tweaks. Stay tuned!

I like it. Seems cleaner, and the categories on top will get me looking back at old articles.

  • Kevin

RSS reader but i like the changes you made.

  • Karmella

    - good call to put the RSS/FB/Twitter/email icons where you put them in the new design – when I visit a new site (or want to connect more with any site) I appreciate having those options in a really clear spot

    – I really like the addition of categories – it will make it easier to browse or look up something — BUT, the old designs had “home” and “blog” buttons, and looking at this new design that’s not clear to me, how to get to either of those – is home = blog?

    – the about-contact-archive placement feels a little off to me, because that’s not at all where I would look for them, and the size and font makes me eyes slide by it like an ad – I see it on the very bottom of the site as well, but I feel like I’d stop looking before I found it, unless I had a pressing need to find them

Overall I like it. As far as what I might like to see more of, I noticed the new economy and policy tab – I don’t usually think of MC for that type of topic, but I’d love to see more of it (although I know that’s not the site core).

  • Carson

RSS reader here too, but site looks good!

  • http://www.jimswildride.blogspot.com Deanna

I like the categories and RSS subscription at the top. There’s an overall cleaner feel to the site now than before. Good job!

I live in Alaska, USA, and I don’t have much choice on prices when I buy things at the store – especially fresh produce. We’ll be putting in a greenhouse next year to help with that, but the prices I pay depend on whichever retailers are willing to have items barged up. That means there’s a lot of online shopping going on up here. Tips on where to shop online would be nice, and ways to save other than at the grocery store are the ones I’m most likely to be able to use.

  • Rylan

Minor changes but it really tuned it up. Good work.

  • http://www.financiallypoor.com Kevin

Looks great. A lot more organized.

  • http://liverealnow.net Jason@LiveRealnow

I like seeing all of the subscription options at the top.

  • http://www.moneyfunk.net Money Funk

I like the changes. However, you need to update your contest date to September. :)

  • Jenny

I just read in google reader, so the site design doesn’t make much of a difference to me. I do like how prominent the rss subscription button is. There are some sites I haven’t subscribed to because I lost interest before I found the button.

I don’t like how in the right sidebar you have sponsor links above the categorized articles.

  • Melody

I have subscribe to this blog for quite a while so I read from RSS feed but I really do like the new layout.

The only suggestions I have is maybe have a “how to” section… like how to open a Roth IRA, how to a car loan, how to apply for a home loan, how to consolidate debt… I think you have talked about stuff like that and those are usually great articles! ^_^

I hope I win, my wedding is coming up and we couldn’t afford a videogapher so this would be a great way to record that day. :-)

  • rachel crisman

For me,it looks easier on the eyes. Its clear, attractive and makes good sense. Good job.The giveaway is awesome. Please count me in,would love to win!!!

  • lostAnnfound

Seems like small changes, but I still like it.

  • http://susanheim.blogspot.com Susan Heim

I really like the new layout. I especially like how you’ve moved the subscription options to the top so readers don’t have to hunt around for them. This format is more streamlined and pleasing to the eye.

  • Susan Laura

I like the new layout. My first impressions of it are that it’s easier to read – more streamlined, with colors and backgrounds that make it less stressful on my eyes.

I do a lot of reading/researching on the internet so if a website assaults my eyes it is immediately dropped. The worst: black background with white words and red accents. Yikes!

  • PJ S

Very nice site, real crisp and user friendly! Nice work.

  • Brenden

I especially like putting the RSS and other subscription stuff where you did. Having that be prominent will just enable more people to subscribe easier.
I also like going from two colored bars below the title banner.
I don’t like the drop shadows on the text in the bottom bar. (where your copyright is)

  • Bobbi

Changes look good. Not too much difference, but I like the box with the twitter, subscriber, etc, box where it is now. Looks cleaner. :)

  • http://[email protected] Donna Kramer

Much easier to navagate and more informative. Easier to read, too.
I really would like the camera. I have 3 Grandsons that would love to be on video.

  • Rick

I’m an RSS reader also but do occasionally visit the site. The new one is much “cleaner” and easier to navigate. The articles are excellent as always!

  • Sylvia

I love that things are sleeker without being drastically different. I hate it when a site I’m used to does an overhaul and I don’t even recognize it anymore! But this is cleaner, a bit easier to read and use. Like it!

  • james

Nice new site layout & colors.

    Keep up the good job.

  • Tracy

I am an RSS reader as well, but after seeing how easy the site is to navigate, I have put it up on my quick bookmarks to visit more often. I like how easy the format is to navigate, and I like the older articles listed on the right.

  • Anissa

I really like the new color layout (green is much nicer on the eyes than grey). I also like that the various social media links are now in the top corner so you can easily share w/ friends instead of hunting around for them.
The category links are also a great touch as you can easily search for past columns and I think the ones you posted cover pretty much what I need.

  • gina

I like the new site too. I do like the tabs with the categories since it makes finding specific articles easier. It also looks clean and streamlined, but not so different that it appears like a completely different site.

  • judyyy

I like it a lot! Good Job!

  • Kaitlyn

    New touch ups look good.

    Thanks for the opp.

  • Heather Dykeman

I also read from RSS, but did take a few minutes to come here directly and check it out. I like the new layout and glad that the google ads are gone from the top which was kind of distracting in the old design. The boxes on the bottom right are all very organized too. All in all, subtle, but effective changes. Very nice.

  • Betty

Very nice and clean! Easy to navigate. Keep up the good work!

  • http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/kathykibby Kathy

The new site looks great. More streamlined and easier to read.

  • Jonathan

I like the new site, but more importantly, I like the information and advice you give!

  • http://www.JoyInOurJourney.com Julieanne

I like the new color layout, and how things appear easier to find. Great job!

  • KVDW

As always.. the site is both helpful and looks good. Thanks.

  • Small Footprints

I think the new design is great … it’s “clean” and easy to navigate. While the old design, with pictures in the header was nice, it did seem to slow down the process of getting to the good stuff (your posts and links). This new design is fresh and I can get to the good stuff easily. Thanks!

  • Beth

Site has a more up to date look. Great job. I also find the information from your articles very helpful.

  • Emily

Small changes, but I definitely like the improvement in color. Thanks for getting rid of the grey!

  • http://www.tugazone.net Tugazone

    Hello,

the main modifications i like, is the placing together all the subscribing methods.
Also i agree that its easier to read now.

The integration of Google ads with the related articles is very good also, the only thing i dont like very much its the big banner on the top, but its part of monetizing the blog.

    Best of luck to all.

    Regards
    Soares

  • Velvet Hubler

I like the new sight so much easier to navigate also.

  • http://4oneaday.blogspot.com/ Art Ist

I like the new design, easy to navigate

  • Megan

    Lookin’ good :D

  • http://www.biblemoneymatters.com Peter

I like the new look, it does seem a bit cleaner and easier to navigate. congrats on a job well done.

  • Ryan

Minor but necessaryu changes. Good job.

  • Allison

    Looks good!

  • Boba Nerd

The new design looks so much cleaner- thanks for putting the ads into a less obtrusive place! I also appreciate you kept the simple fonts and left out “flashy” features. Nothing bugs me more when a website is slow to load due to videos, flashing graphics, pictures, etc.

I would appreciate in your Resources sidebar if you included maybe financial calculators?

I don’t really understand why Education is under Career. Your education articles were about saving for college, 529 plans, ways students can save on books.

Lastly, one of my personal fave links- books- is missing. I found it buried in the archives but would love if it got a more prominent position on your homepage.

  • http://www.mamasmoneysavers.com Cher

I like the layout and love the posts. Very helpful! I would love to see more about making money online.

  • kathy

looks good. I like how the follow, fb, subscribe is easier to find.

  • http://change-is-possible.net Heather

RSS reader, so changes wouldn’t have been noticed at all without this post… I do like that the ad and the subscription area were switched at the top.

  • Rylie

RSS reader but this is a very clean looking site. Very easy to navigate too. Thanks for the giveaway and an opportunity to browse!

  • Therese

It doesn’t look that much different to me, except it looks easier to subscribe to.

  • Snowflake07 (Audra)

The site is looking great. I’ve been bookmarking some of your articles for future reference; especially the ones on investing in stocks. I would love reading any articles on stock investing and small business tax articles. Thanks! :-)

  • Tom

The menu is clear and easy to navigate. The color scheme is perfect – Cash Green!

  • http://www.financialsamurai.com Financial Samurai

Seems pretty good and consistent. What about a potential 3rd column?

It’s somthing I struggle with a lot. I like the simplicity of two main columns.

    Cheers

    • Andrew (Admin)

Not a bad idea and I think the concerns are similar to what you mention…Is it worth having the extra content at the expense of potentially making things a bit more complicated to look at? Tough one!

  • Laura

Looks great! Like the new design. Putting the categories up on top make it easier to find things. Social media icons helpful as well. As always, great information. Keep up the great work! Thanks for such helpful financial info!!

  • Henria O.

I like the changes! It seems cleaner and easier to navigate! I really love how the menu bar is now very organized into better categories! The only category I would suggest is one for “Students.” Thanks for the chance to win!

  • Jennifer

I like how it has the facebook / twitter link at the top now instead of seeing the ad.

  • Jacob LaFountaine

I like having the topics right there on top. Much easier to find what you are looking for

  • http://www.contestsandgiveaways.net/ Idaho Jill

I can’t think of any negatives – it seems clean & easy to read/find things!

  • Ber

The new layout is extremely good! It’s really more organized with the categories clearly visible. And the geen bar looks better too.

  • Elizabeth I

The new look is better. I do think you can make it look more visually appealing with some spacing and font changes. Your logo “money crashers” is smaller than the icons for rss, twitter, etc. Make the logo bigger and the icons smaller. 5271 subscribers does not mean anything to me. I do not care what 5271 people do, put this in your press kit for advertising. Take it off.

The ads by google next to your related articles is visually confusing as well. My eye does not know where to go. Are Ads by google paying you that much that you cannot forgo them as a sponsor? Or, should you at this point since you have (5000+ subscribers) reduce your advertising spots, and charge for for them. I tend to shy away from blogs that are loaded with unimportant advertising.

My other thought is ensure the content you provide is authoritative. I could be mistaken but I think I read an article on rental property here say 6 months ago. The person who wrote the article did not have rental property. It was really weak and as some who has had rental property, it was not impressive. If you want to write on a subject. Find people who are well qualified on the subject, and as them.

All in all, I am busy with three kids, so if I have checked out your blog more than once a year, take it as a compliment that there is something of value to me in your content ;)

    • Andrew (Admin)

Elizabeth, thanks for all the awesome feedback and for your honest take on a bunch of different areas of the site. We will be sure to take this into consideration! Thank you for visiting!

These changes look good! I am really digging the category tabs on the homepage. Makes finding past articles that I want to reference, much easier.

  • Wendi P

Love the changes; easier to find things. I love the content new or old :-)

  • Jen

    Looks good.

  • Evelynn

I like how the rss, tweet, and other shortcuts are at the very top in the banner. It makes it easy to see/find. Looks nice!

  • Michelle

    Love the new Look!

  • Henry Lum

I’m going to leave a positive feedback , the site looks quite nice. The top section of the website is very useful and isn’t that “HARD” to find. I’m really digging the way you guys thought of putting the most recent articles in the left. That’s a bonus right there.

  • Doug Sharp

Nice new layout – so high tech and up to date !

  • Vana

Love the new site and new design!

  • Bobbi
